Riddhima Kapoor Recalls Dad, Rishi's Last Days And Tragic Death, 'We Were Trolled For Not Being Sad'

In a recent interview, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni recalled her father, Rishi Kapoor's last days and shares the heartbreaking experience of her family getting trolled for not being sad after his demise.

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh got married in 1980 and welcomed two children, Ranbir Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Unfortunately, Rishi Kapoor passed away in 2020, after battling a prolonged fight with cancer. His tragic demise was a huge loss for the film industry, his fans and his family. Though the late actor seemingly recovered from cancer, the deadly disease returned more intensely after initially abating. Now, in a recent interview, Rishi's daughter, Riddhima opened up about his last days.

In an interview with Galatta India, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni opened up about her father, Rishi Kapoor and his tragic demise. Talking about the same, she shared that Rishi had a lively personality and it was difficult for their family to realise that he was actually very ill. Further recalling his last days, Riddhima shared that Rishi was under medical supervision during the shoot of his last film, Sharmaji Namkeen. While his family wanted him to take it easy, the late actor kept shooting all over Delhi and even enjoyed street food. In her words:

“The only thing he wanted to do was face the camera and make movies. Even when he was in the hospital in New York, the only thought he had was if I will be able to work again? We honestly didn’t want him to work at the time, we wanted him to rest. Delhi, at the time, the pollution was… it was not a safe environment for him. He wouldn’t take no for an answer. He was having street food also."

It was in 2018 when Rishi Kapoor jetted off to New York for his treatment. However, he came back to India the next year, as he was doing much better. Riddhima revealed that her father attended all the Diwali parties and was very excited. But the cancer returned aggressively and his condition deteriorated. Riddhima mentioned that it was the worst phase for their family, and people trolled them for not looking upset about Rishi Kapoor's demise. She said:

“It came back. It came back very quickly, it was very aggressive. We did spend Diwali together, we went out. He was very excited. He was so happy, attended all the Diwali parties, we spent Diwali together and next thing, in a few months, he is back in the hospital. A lot of people said that they don’t look like they are very upset but they don’t know what we went through at the time.”

Riddhima recalls the heartbreaking moment of Rishi Kapoor's demise

Riddhima was in Delhi when Rishi Kapoor passed away. Thus, she couldn’t be there with him in his last moments due to the lockdown. The loving daughter had to seek special permission to travel from Delhi to Mumbai by road, but she could only reach after her father's last rites. Recalling the same, Riddhima shared:

“It was horrible. Because my brother and mother broke the news to me on FaceTime. Calling me up at 7:30-8 in the morning… telling me that this has happened.”

Riddhima Kapoor recalled the last memory of her father and shared that the latter had called her two days before his death, but she missed his call. However, she revealed that she still regrets it, as after that, her dad couldn't respond or talk to anyone because he was in the hospital. Riddhima also added that she took a screenshot of the call log as it was the last time he called her and said:

“He tried to call me two days before this happened. He gave me a missed call, I still have it on my phone. That was his last missed call to me and I thought… I wish I had taken that. After that, he couldn’t really respond or talk because he was in the hospital and I still have that missed call saved. I took a screenshot and I saved it. Because that was the last time he called me to actually talk to me. I called him after that but he couldn’t speak.”
