Rohit Sharma has covered a journey of many ups and downs in Test cricket. The cricketer has gone through a dramatic transformation as a sportsman. However, the one thing that has remained unchanged is his resilience and patience. Rohit has faced much criticism from fans and experts. Sometimes, he was questioned about his form, while sometimes, his abilities to perform well in longer formats were doubted. But the cricketer never let this trolling pull him down.
Rather, Rohit Sharma dealt with these criticisms in his own way. He let his determination and focus on the game do the talking. Every time, after being trolled, the cricketer silenced all the critics by showing them that he was the best opener in Test cricket. The hitman has always risen above the noise to prove again and again that he is an exceptional talent in the Indian Men's Cricket Team.
Rohit Sharma was to make his Test debut in 2010, in a match against South Africa. But an unfortunate ankle injury put a halt to his Test journey. Three years later, the cricketer finally made his debut in 2013, in a Test match against West Indies. In the match, he scored a century with 177 runs. He received a 'Player of the Match' award and also garnered high expectations from the public for future matches.
However, the grounds of South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia proved to be disastrous for Rohit Sharma. The cricketer went through a streak of low runs in the series. As a result, he was often kept out of the Test team as other players joined. The cricketer was finally dropped from the England Tour in 2018. This was a huge setback for the cricketer. Meanwhile, his fans and experts also critiqued his performance, while trolls went hard against him.
Despite the hurdles and the incessant trolling, Rohit Sharma did not back down from the challenge of proving himself again. After being dropped from the Test team, the cricketer made a tweet that, 'Sun will rise again tomorrow'. And he proved this by making a legendary comeback with record-breaking runs in ODIs and T20Is. After that, he went on to score five centuries in the World Cup 2019, proving why he is called the 'Hitman'. With his batting skills proven again, Rohit Sharma was ready to prove himself in Test matches.

After proving himself in the white ball formats, Rohit Sharma was all set to make his Test comeback. The cricketer was put in the position of the opener. Though he had proven himself to be a good opener in the ODIs, many still questioned whether he would be successful in the Test matches. Many of the critics also considered the Test format a weakness for him. But the batsman erased all doubts regarding his worth when he became the first opener to score two centuries in his first game itself.
This phase of Rohit Sharma's cricket career is considered as his rebirth. This was the emergence of 'Rohit Sharma 2.0'. Interestingly, the match where he made a double century was against South Africa, the same series where he scored low runs after his debut. Now, instead of questioning his abilities in the Test format, he was hailed as a master of Test cricket. Rohit also received 'Player of the Match' and 'Player of the Series' awards.
Overseas grounds were also considered as a weakness of Rohit Sharma by his critics. But the cricketer proved everyone wrong again by scoring the highest runs in the overseas series. Even though the Indian team went through many ups and downs in the series, Rohit Sharma helped the team make a comeback with his century. The team was trailing behind by 99 runs, and the hitman scored a century. He was again awarded with 'Player of the Match'. Moreover, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that Rohit Sharma had aced all the formats and all the cricket grounds.
Rohit Sharma became the captain of Team India in 2022, after Virat Kohli stepped down from the position. As the team captain, he led India through many Test match victories. It was under him that the British Cricket Team tasted defeat for the very first time in a Test series. India also won against Bangladesh in the Kanpur Test match. But a series of losses followed India after this match, especially one of the worst defeats ever against New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma's professional career as a cricketer has been as interesting and unpredictable as a cricket match. With many centuries worth remembering and some losses that tried to pull him down, the hitman has stood neutral in the face of both criticism and praise. As an opener, he aced the format, which had turned into a blot in his cricket career. He turned all of his losses as a chance to prove his worth again and again.
Even as a captain, he has led the Indian team with pride in victories and with resilience in defeats. And as an opener, the batsman showed that he is also among the best cricketers in the world. Now that Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, his cricket career will be remembered as one with many challenges that he has always overcome. Posting about his retirement from Test cricket on social media, Rohit Sharma said:
"It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format."
