Bollywood actor, Saif Ali Khan is one of the most popular faces in the Hindi film industry. He made his acting debut with the film, Parampara in 1993. Over the years, he has been a part of many films, including Hum Tum, Tara Rum Pum, Agent Vinod, Phantom, and Rangoon among others. Saif holds a massive fan following and often hits the headlines for his personal and professional life. Now, the actor is again in the news for his latest revelation on his National Award win.

For the unversed, Saif Ali Khan won the National Award for his 2005 film, Hum Tum. However, since then, the actor has been questioned about his win. The controversy began after Saif's film won in comparison with Shah Rukh Khan’s film, Swades, and Hrithik Roshan’s movie, Koi Mil Gaya, and people thought that it was because his mother, Sharmila Tagore, was the Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson at the time. Now, in a recent interview with Zoom, Saif opened up about the controversy and revealed that his mother did not get the award for him. He said:

”My mother didn’t get it for me. Because if my mother could give me stuff, then she would have given me much more. I guess she wouldn’t have been my mother if she had done this kind of a thing.”

Saif Ali Khan reveals why he won the National Award over Shah Rukh Khan

Not only this, Saif Ali Khan also shared how filmmaker, Sudhir Mishra, who was one of the jury heads at the time, told him why he got the award instead of Shah Rukh Khan. Revealing the reason for the same, Saif mentioned that it was due to the ease of performance. He said:

“Sudhir Mishra who headed the jury that year, when he gave me the award said he’s giving it to me because of the ease of performance.”

Recalling the moment, Saif Ali Khan shared that he was in London when the awards were announced. So, he was in a dilemma about whether to attend the awards ceremony or not, as he had been through quite a lot of tumultuous ups and downs in his personal life. However, his mother, Sharmila asked him to attend the event nonetheless.

Saif Ali Khan was in London when the National Award was announced

In an earlier interview with the Indian Express, film director, Kunal Kohli also mentioned that Saif Ali Khan was on a holiday in London when the award ceremony took place. He also recalled his conversation with the actor and revealed that the latter was dicey about whether he should attend the event or not. Kunal said:

“When it was announced that he has won the National Award. Saif is like, ‘Should I go?’ I was like are you mad, please go! He said, ‘I am on a holiday in London. You think they would give me a ticket from London?’ We laughed and said they will give you a ticket from Mumbai to Delhi, not London to Delhi. Then he said, ‘Yes Ammi and Abbu are also saying that I should go’.”
