Saif Ali Khan got married to Amrita Singh in October 1991, and the duo welcomed two children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Saif was just 20 years old when he tied the knot with Amrita, who was 12 years older than him. However, they got separated in 2004. Now, as Saif Ali Khan and his mother, Sharmila Tagore appeared on the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 8, they opened up about the former's marriage with Amrita.
During the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 8, Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan had a candid chat about their personal lives with the host, Karan Johar. Saif secretly married Amrita Singh at a very young age. Reflecting on the same, Karan asked Saif, "How does one suddenly get married at that age?" To which, the actor shared that there was so much going on in his life at the time and he felt that it was safe to make a home out of his relationship. Saif said:
"It was kind of like running away from home in a sense. I don't remember so many things going on and I found a kind of security and an idea that it feels great. I thought I could make a home out of that."

Speaking along the same lines, Sharmila Tagore added that Saif and Amrita were both very similar and had great fun together. She shared that the ex-couple would indulge in laughing and mimicking sessions, leaving everyone in splits. Adding that Saif and Amrita looked very happy together, Sharmila said:
“They were both very similar. They were very funny. Both of them when they used to talk, there used to be a lot of laughter, mimicking other people, tearing somebody into bits in a funny way. As you know he is good at mimicking and she is a great storyteller. They looked very happy together.”
Saif further revealed that Sharmila was upset with him after he secretly married Amrita without informing his parents, which left her hurt. It was after the wedding that Saif informed his mother that he was already married. However, he added that his mom was supportive when she got to know about the marriage, but she was seemingly hurt and started crying. In his words:
"She (Sharmila Tagore) was supportive when I did it, and I remember it. She had said, ‘I believe you are living with someone and you are doing something.’ So I said yes and she said, ‘Well, just don’t get married.’ And I said, ‘I got married yesterday.’ A big tear fell out of her eye and she started crying. She said, ‘you’ve really hurt me. Why didn’t you tell me?’”

Sharmila also recalled the moment when Saif told her about his marriage with Amrita and revealed how she immediately ran to her husband, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and informed him. She shared that she met Amrita over tea the next day, and she liked her then-new bahu. Elaborating more on it, Sharmila said:
“I was visiting Mumbai for something. So, Saif came to meet me and said ‘I have something to tell you’ and then he told me. I don’t know what I was doing but I was quiet. He said, ‘Amma, your colour is changing, you’re looking different ‘ and I said, ‘Okay, we’ll talk about it later’. After he left, I ran up to Tiger and told him. There was also a long silence on that part and we left it at that. The next day, I called him and said ‘I would like to meet Amrita’ and we had tea, and we chatted. I liked her but still quite shocked.”
