Bollywood since time immemorial, has seen its fair share of celebrity divorces, where each took a different turn than the other. While some of the ex-couples decided to end their marriage mutually and had an amicable divorce, there have been some who have gotten involved in a nasty battle with public arguments. Such a kind of publicly blown divorce case has been that of Saif Ali Khan and his ex-wife, Amrita Singh. For the unversed, the duo had eloped to marry in 1991 and had called it quits 13 years later in 2004. Their divorce was hugely discussed in public and it evolved into nasty fight for alimony and an unfortunate custody battle.
After their divorce in 2004, Saif Ali Khan had to pay a hefty alimony of over 5 crores to his ex-wife, Amrita Singh and also take up the responsibility of managing the expenses of their kids, Sara and Ibrahim until they turned 18. Moreover, the court had also granted the custody of his kids to his ex-wife, with only visitation rights granted to him. However, in one of his earlier interviews with Telegraph, Saif had revealed how Amrita refused him to meet his kids, and even barred them from coming to meet and spend time with him. He had mentioned:
“I’m not allowed to meet my children. They aren’t allowed to come to visit me, let alone stay with me. Why? Because there’s a new woman in my life who’d influence my children against their mother? That’s so much hogwash and Amrita knows it. Right now, my kids are growing up with Amrita’s relatives and maidservants while she’s out working in a TV serial. Why does she need to do that, when I’m more than willing to support my family?”

In the same interview, Saif Ali Khan also spoke about how his ex-wife, Amrita purposely continued to wrongly tarnish his stance as an irresponsible father. He mentioned how in reality, despite his attempts to provide for his kids, Amrita was not ready to let him come close to them. Revealing how he truly missed his children, Sara and Ibrahim, Saif had mentioned:
“My wife and I have gone our separate ways. I respect my wife’s space. But why am I being constantly reminded of how terrible a husband I was, and how awful a father I am? I’ve my son Ibrahim’s photograph in my wallet. Each time I look at it, I feel like crying. I miss my daughter Sara all the time.”
Well, one of the prime highlights of the widely discussed divorce issue of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh was the alimony amount of Rs 5 crores which the former was required to pay to his ex-wife. The situation was all the more difficult for the actor since he underwent a severe financial crunch back then. Speaking about the same in another of his interviews, Saif expressed his anger on the same and had mentioned:
“I don’t have that kind of money. I’ve promised her I’ll pay up the rest of the money, and I will, even if I’ve to slog till I drop dead. Whatever I’ve earned from doing ads, stage shows and films is being given for my children. I’ve no money,”

In yet another of their verbal altercations over the matter of his divorce, Saif had further mentioned how it was not just him, but even his mother, Sharmila and his sisters who were publicly hurled abuses and taunted at by his ex-wife, Amrita Singh. In his words:
“It isn’t nice to be constantly reminded of how worthless you are and to have taunts, jeers, insults and abuses thrown at your mother and sister all the time. I’ve gone through all of it.”
