Saina Nehwal Married Parupalli Kashyap After Dating Him For 13 Years, Parted Ways After Seven Years

Ace badminton player Saina Nehwal is the pride of the nation, having won 24 international titles. The only female to earn the title of world number 1 badminton player, Saina, represented India three times in the Olympics. She is the first Indian badminton player to have won an Olympic medal and has achieved several other milestones in badminton.

Saina has made her nation proud with her achievements in badminton. Talking about her personal life, Saina married fellow badminton player, Parupalli Kashyap, in a private ceremony in 2018. The duo chose to have an intimate wedding. However, after seven years of marital bliss, Saina announced her separation from Parupalli Kashyap, and her announcement has shocked many.

Saina Nehwal met Parupalli Kashyap at a training camp

Saina Nehwal met Parupalli Kashyap, a fellow badminton player, at a training camp. Soon after that, they kept bumping into each other and became friends. Their friendship turned into love, and the duo began dating in 2005. They started travelling together on tours and became each other’s pillar of strength.

Since both Saina and Kashyap were badminton players, they hardly had any time to hang out. Their schedules were extremely tight, leaving them very little time to spend with each other. However, despite the chaotic schedule, they had each other’s backs and would go to a quiet place to spend quality time.

Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap’s wedding was getting postponed

Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap lived in the same locality and would often visit each other’s homes. Their parents knew about their feelings for each other and were supportive. In 2012, the duo decided to get married, but it kept getting postponed due to her games. They even considered living in, but weren’t sure whether they could convince their parents to do so.

Finally, in 2018, the couple decided to get hitched in an intimate ceremony. On December 16, 2018, the lovebirds gave a pleasant surprise to their fans by announcing the news of their wedding. Saina Nehwal shared their first-ever picture with her husband, Parupalli Kashyap, after their wedding. Saina looked beautiful in a powder blue lehenga and minimal makeup and jewellery, her husband Kashyap looked dapper in a pink kurta and white pyjama. She captioned the picture as:

“Best match of my life #justmarried.”

In an interview with The Times of India, Saina spoke about her relationship with Kashyap and revealed how they grew close to each other. In her words:

“We started travelling for bigger tours from 2007-08 onwards. We played tournaments together, trained together and slowly, started paying more attention to each other's matches. In the competitive world that we live in, it is difficult to get close to someone. But somehow we both found it very easy to talk to each other, talk about our matches. The feeling gradually grew.”

Saina Nehwal announced her separation from Parupalli Kashyap after seven years of marital bliss

On July 13, 2025, Saina took to her Instagram stories and shared a note. The badminton player shared that she and her husband, Parupalli, had decided to part ways after much consideration. Her note can be read as:

“Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time."

Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have seen each other rise in the badminton field. From friends, lovers to partners, they have always been each other’s biggest cheerleaders.
