While our Hindi film industry is dipped deep in the concept of love and romance, very few real-life celebrity couples can be remembered for their lifelong devotion towards their partners. However, there's one couple who holds a special place in everyone's hearts. Yes! we are talking about the evergreen couple, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu have always stayed by each other's side through the thick and thin of their lives. And, theirs is a love story that overcame an age difference of 22 years. However, sadly this year, Saira Banu had lost the love of her life, Dilip Kumar, forever. The actor had breathed his last on July 7, 2021. It was Saira who was by his side throughout his journey.
In a throwback interview with a leading daily, Saira Banu had opened up about the love she and her husband, Dilip Kumar, had received from their fans across the nation after they had announced their engagement. The iconic actress had shared an incident when she and Dilip Kumar had to go inside their respective suites through the hotel's kitchen because a huge crowd was waiting inside the hotel's main lobby to have a mere glimpse of their favourite couple. Recalling the same, Saira had said:
"As soon as the news of our engagement broke, after the initial surprise, the overwhelmed fans started running amok on the sets of our respective films, making shooting difficult. Coincidently, both of us were in Kolkata at that time. When we landed in the City of Joy, the fans spilled into the tarmac, and when we scurrled into our car, they lifted it up. At the hotel, we had to be smuggled in through the kitchen entrance to our suits, but they soon discovered our room numbers and came pounding on our doors."
Going further in the interview, Saira Banu had also stated that after a big section of their massive fanbase had got overly excited for their marriage, she and Dilip Kumar had decided to reschedule their wedding to an earlier date. The actress had added that their fans were gate-crashing their film locations and hotels where they were staying, as a result of which, both of them had found rescheduling a safe option for the success of their wedding ceremony. However, they still had faced a big problem on their wedding day, as the food ran out. In her words:
"We left Kolkata on October 8. On October 11, just nine days after we got engaged, I became Mrs Dilip Kumar. There was no time to get cards printed, there were gatecrashers galore at the wedding, the food ran out quickly, forcing my mother and brother to make SOS calls to hotels, but I was in seventh heaven."
At the end of the interview, Saira Banu had also admitted that she and her husband, Dilip Kumar were quite different from each other in person. But the two had a lot of things in common, like their love for sports and strong inclination towards classical music. Saira Banu had also revealed that she was a regular swimmer. But, her husband, Dilip Kumar, had always avoided the idea of entering into the pool because he wasn't comfortable with his body hair. However, the doting wife had stated that he was an excellent footballer. Another common thing between Saira and Dilip was their mutual love for riding, as both of them were keen lovers of long drives.
For the unversed, Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar had tied the knot on October 11, 1966!
