Aneet Padda's On-Screen Dad, Rajesh Kumar Was In Rs. 2 Crore Debt, Says, 'I Had Exhausted All My..'

Rajesh Kumar has been a part of landmark shows such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Kota Factory. However, his role as Aneet Padda, a.k.a. 'Vaani's father in Mohit Suri-directed Saiyaara, has won the hearts of the audience. He is shown to be a calm, composed father who accepts 'Krish Kapoor', a.k.a Ahaan Panday, shown as Aneet's lover. Rajesh has been basking in the success of the movie, but there was a time when he was in debt of Rs. 2 crore and just had Rs. 2,500 in his pocket. 

Rajesh Kumar reveals how he went bankrupt and had a debt of Rs. 2 crore

Rajesh has returned to the world of cinema with Saiyaara. The Mohit Suri-directed movie has shattered box office records and has already crossed the Rs. 400 crore mark and is expected to touch Rs. 500 crore soon. Now, Rajesh recently sat down for an interview with Meri Saheli and spoke on the success of the movie and how, at one point, he only had Rs. 2,500 in his bank account, and how he was in Rs. 2 crore debt due to bankruptcy. Rajesh shared:

"The incoming and outgoing flow had gone for a toss. There was no incoming, and I had exhausted all my reserves because of the outgoing. I went under debt of Rs 2 crore. Bankruptcy is a big word, but definitely, I had that feeling with me for a long time. I was not able to generate money for survival also. This was definitely a phase.” 

Rajesh Kumar revealed how he quit acting and took up farming

Rajesh, going ahead in the interview, shared that he wanted to debunk the myth that farming has been taken over by people who do not have any other options. He revealed that no one these days dreams of being a farmer, and he wanted to change that mindset. He shared that he took the support of his family when he was not making money. For the unversed, in 2019, the actor quit acting and took up farming 2019 but there he also faced challenges. The weather did not favour the farming conditions, and then he had to also bear the pandemic. In his words:

"Financially, I was on a slide. By the lockdown, I had used up my savings, and was literally bankrupt. I didn’t have anything in my pocket. I had huge loans, and that was adding to the pressure."

The actor then took up a role in a movie called, Binny and Family. He shared that he could not even buy simple gifts for his children as he just had Rs. 2,500 in his bank when he was in the UK. He did travel back and forth two times during the 24-day shoot and shared that he could not even get chocolates for his kids. Earlier, in an interview with Galatta India, he shared that farming had made him a better actor and shared:

"Now, whenever my role demands emotions, I simply remember my farming days and tear up. I don’t have to visualise as an actor that my parents died or a friend died, I simply remember: Arey yaar, khet mein aag lag gaya tha uss din."
