Writing is the soul of a successful film, and acting, direction, and cinematography follow later. Good writing, can potentially change a film's fate, but the Hindi film industry has taken time to recognise its contribution. It all started when the iconic writing duo, Salim-javed, wrote successful films from the 70s and even became a voice for the recognition of writers in the Hindi cinema. Credited for being the force behind the 'Angry Young Man' era, they penned great films like Deewar, Sholay, Zanjeer, Haathi Mere Saathi, Seeta Aur Geeta, Andaaz and more. However, no one could understand why the admired duo parted ways in 1982 after being together for 12 years. In a recent interview, Salim Khan revealed what went behind the scenes during their split.
Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were formidable forces in the Hindi film industry, and over the years, fans have pondered the reason behind their split. After staying silent for a long, Salim Khan recently sat down for an interview with Magic Moments and revealed that Javed Akhtar wanted to part ways with him. However, he never understood the exact cause behind the big decision by Javed and simply respected it. He was quoted as saying:
"Even I never understood; how will I explain it to anyone else? On one random day, he suddenly said that he wants to separate. We used to work together from morning till night. When he said main alag hona chahta hu. I thought I didn't hear him clearly, but he was asking for a separation."
Salim Khan didn't expect Javed Akhtar to suddenly decide to part ways. But, after Javed remained adamant on his decision, he understood that the screenwriter-lyricist would have thought about it carefully because it wasn't a simple and sudden thought. Likewise, Javed confirmed the same. The veteran actor-writer admitted that there has been no fight or bitterness between them. But rather a silence on why things went the way they did. In his words:
"He was coming to see me off till the car, but maine unko roka aur bola. 'I can look after myself'. I never felt any bitterness towards him. There was no fight between us. It was a partnership that broke one day and no one got to know what happened and why. "I never asked him again why it happened. Jab yeh ho hi gaya toh poochne ka kya hi matlab that. He did his own films separately, and many announcements came out after that."
After years, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar came together for a docu-series about them titled Angry Young Men, which their kids planned. In the series, Javed Akhtar addressed his decision to part ways with Salim Khan. He revealed that he spent most of his time with the latter when they worked together but later met new people, changing their social circles. Moreover, fatigue was another cause. He said:
"I made new friends, and he made new friends, and slowly our circles started separating. Our evening meetings stopped; that was also a reason, but that was not the major reason. The major reason, according to me, was that the spring of our career was drying up. Fatigue was showing in our work, too. No doubt about that."
Javed Akhtar added that they decided to part unanimously and didn't intend to share anything more about it with the public. However, they did it in a civilised manner, unlike others who part ways by throwing mud at one another. The veteran lyricist also mentioned that they may share different versions of their working experience, but it would be good. Javed said:

"We sometimes argue we're not perfect, but no one is. I'd give my side of the story, and he'd give his. So we just never talked about parting ways. Even when people asked us why or how it happened, we said we didn't know; we don't like to talk about it. We only speak about the good times we had."
