In 2012, in a rare interview with siasat.com, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had opened up about his relationship status, plans of getting married and what is the ideal age for getting married in life. Answering all the questions in his trademark quick-witted manner, the then-49-year-old director had stated that he is still single in his life and is looking for a partner. Sanjay also shared that there's no perfect age for getting married, as it all depends on the couple. According to the iconic filmmaker, love is something that can enter someone's life, even when they're 40 or 85. The age simply doesn't need to do anything with love. He had explained:
"I love Bela's (Sanjay Leela Bhansali's sister, Bela Segal) concept of love striking two people who are seen as past the age of marriage. Love can strike at 45 or 85. I am 49, and I am still waiting for love to happen."
There's no argument in saying that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the most successful directors of all time and is only getting better with his every project. However, not many are aware that he is still unmarried at the age of 59. In 1999, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had met popular choreographer, Vaibhavi Merchant on the sets of his film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It was a successful team-up, which was next seen in 2007, when Sanjay had brought Vaibhavi onboard during the shooting of Saawariya. It was when Sanjay and Vaibhavi had started to come closer. The two had started appearing in public with each other, and during the premiere of Saawariya, Sanjay had entered into the event with Vaibhavi that had raised a lot of eyebrows back then.
The two had remained tight-lipped about their bond, but the headlines were filled with their brewing romance and closeness. In a report in The Times Of India, a source close to their families had stated that the couple was going to get married in March 2008, and the preparations were going in full swing.
There were also reports that Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Vaibhavi Merchant had gotten engaged in a low-key ceremony in the presence of their family members, who were eagerly looking for their marriage, which was supposed to mark a grand celebration. However, the reports had turned into rumours, and it was reported that the two had parted ways with mutual consent. A report in the Mumbai Mirror had claimed that it was Sanjay Bhansali and Vaibhavi's unsorted personal differences that had forced them to terminate the plans of their possible marriage.
