Born into a Maharashtrian family with Rajput descent, Sarika was very young when she had lost her father and had turned into the sole breadwinner of her family. At the mere age of 5, Sarika had begun her career in films as a child artist. In the year 2000, Sarika had won the National Award for Best Costume Design for the film, Hey Ram. And in 2005, the actress had won another National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film, Parzania.
Talking about Sarika's personal life, she had tied the knot with superstar, Kamal Haasan in 1988 after being in a live-in relationship with him. The duo had welcomed two daughters, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan. However, after 16 years of togetherness, Sarika and Kamal had separated in 2004.

In an interview with News18.com, Sarika talked about taking a break from work for one year and how it got extended for five years. Talking about her sabbatical, Sarika said:
"I just thought I was wasting life in a way if you look at it. You wake up every morning, (things) don’t happen, you go to sleep. So I just decided to take one year’s break and not do any work. Go away and do something totally different."
Sarika further revealed that she had started doing theatre and enjoyed the experience and shared how the one-year break had turned into five. The actress further revealed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she ran out of money as she was making less than Rs. 3000 while working in theatre. Talking about the same, Sarika shared:
"Lockdown happened and the money ran out, so where do you go? You go back to acting because in theatre you just get like Rs. 2000-2700 and you can’t do anything so this is why I was not at all there. It was a very conscious decision but I thought it would be for a year but it turned out to be five years. Those were great five years."

Sarika had given up acting at the peak of her career when she had got married to superstar, Kamal Haasan and had moved to Chennai. It was in the mid-2000 when she had returned to acting with films like Bheja Fry, Manorama Six Feet Under, Parzania and many more. Sarika had also made her television debut in the series, Yudh, which had starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.
