Scarlett Johansson And Colin Jost: Their Relationship Almost Didn't Start After Scarlett 'Panicked'

Actress, Scarlett Johansson and her husband, Colin Jost, are one of Hollywood's most beloved couples to date. For those unaware, this is Scarlett's third marriage. Her first marriage was to fellow Hollywood actor, Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011. A couple of years later, in 2014, she married French journalist, Romain Dauriac. This marriage was also short-lived as they both went their separate ways just three years later, in 2017.

It was in this very year, 2017, that Scarlett first started dating her now-husband, Colin Jost, although the two had first met on the set of SNL, where she hosted the sketch show in 2006. Now, after five years of being happily married to each other, Scarlett has revealed that their romance not only got off to a "weird" start but also almost failed to launch. Here's what she said.

Third time is the charm, and this is especially true for Scarlett Johansson. The Black Widow actress famously gave both love and marriage a third chance after getting together with Saturday Night Live comedian, Colin Jost. After starting to date each other in 2017, the couple tied the knot in 2020. Since then, their marriage has been going as strong as ever, leaving many fans swooning over their relationship. However, in a shocking revelation, during the December 1, 2025, episode of Today With Jenna and Friends, Scarlett revealed how their relationship almost failed to launch.  

Looking back on her first date with Colin while co-hosting the show, the 41-year-old actress revealed that although the date started out fine, the end left her feeling as though they were not meant to be. Claiming that she didn't have much of a dating experience and how she has always been a “serial monogamist”, she stated: 

“My first date with Colin, honestly, nobody ever really asked me out before. I’m telling you. People say that, but it’s true. I was a serial monogamist, and I just never got the traditional, ‘Hey, would you like to have dinner sometime?’” 

Scarlett clearly made an exception for her Saturday Night Live star husband when he asked her out. She opened up about how Colin took them to an Italian restaurant for their first date, stating: 

“He actually asked me out on a date. We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date. We had dinner at like 8 p.m. or whatever.”

The Lucy actress revealed that, up until this point, everything had been going well on their date. While she did think their date was lovely, afterwards, when Colin invited her out for a drink, Scarlett recalled feeling flustered, which led her to leave their date early. She said: 

“Afterwards, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink.’ And I hadn’t dated basically ever, and so I was like, ‘I have to go now. I need to leave.’” 

When Scarlett went to relieve her babysitter for her daughter, her decision to leave also left the sitter confused. She recalled being asked why she was home when it was only 9:36 pm, after she finally went out on a date. The babysitter was not the only one who was left confused, as Colin himself later told the Jurassic World Rebirth star how he totally thought she was acting “weird,” to which Scarlett defended herself by saying that she felt panicked at that time.
