Shabana Azmi Shares Javed Akhtar Wanted Her De Glam When She Dressed Like A Witch In 'Makdee'

Hindi cinemas popular couple, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on December 9, 2024. The couple had a traditional Muslim wedding in 1984. Shabana has done many iconic roles and has played the role of a witch in Vishal Bhardwaj's Makdee. However, do you know that Javed Akhtar once told her to remove the makeup when she was preparing for Makdee?

During a recent interaction at the Actors Roundtable which The Hollywood Reporter organised, Shabana remembered Javed's witty reply to her scary role in Makdee, where she essayed the role of a witch. She shared a funny memory and said that she remembered an interesting thing before anyone could think that Javed Akhtar just says beautiful things. In her words:

"When I was doing Makdee, I played a witch in that film, I tried all kinds of makeup for that character. He saw me in all those things. He asked me, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘I am playing a witch.’ He then said, ‘So remove all your makeup.’ We don’t take each other seriously. We don’t believe in each other’s myths".

Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar have a lot of mutual respect for one another

Shabana, going ahead in the interview, also revealed that her relationship with Javed Akhtar has been successful as they both have a lot of mutual respect for one another. It has been the foundation of their relationship. Javed is known for being the phenomenal lyricist for Sholay, Deewar. On the other hand, Shabana is known for her iconic roles in Hindi cinema.

How Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar manage creative differences?

Going further in the interview, Shabana admitted that she and Javed came from different creative worlds. However, they exchange ideas because he is in the same business as her, so it becomes much easier. However, she agreed that they both came from two different schools. She quoted examples from how she had problems with Javed regarding house construction. In her words:

"I thought why is he making a mansion when I wanted a weekend cottage, but my friend said that he will always think Sholay and I will always think Ankur. So that happens when I want to make something, he wants to expand it. But I am also very critical of him so when I compliment him, he gets really happy.”

Shabana, going ahead in the interview, expressed that Javed had encouraged her to take on different roles that shaped her career. She credited him with persuading her to take up Deepa Mehta's Fire, which was a movie around the concept of same-gender love. She was in two minds as, at that time, such topics were not spoken of. Shabana added:

"Javed asked me if I like the script and if I would be able to defend it. I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Go ahead.’ That gave me courage.”

The actress, once in an interview with the DNA, revealed that she and Javed had never met. However, they had the same family background and so much in common that they should have had an arranged marriage. Javed met Shabana when he used to visit Kaifi Azmi to improve his Urdu poetry writing. He had found himself attracted towards the actress. However, she always said that she had deliberately ignored him. This was because at that time he was married to Honey Irani and had Zoya and Farhan Akhtar.
