Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar have been one of the most reputed and iconic screenwriting duo, who have contributed significantly to Indian cinema with their joint association. They were cumulatively known as ‘Salim Javed’ throughout the film industry, and there was rarely a film that didn’t have their masterpieces at its core. However, it was around in 1982 when the two of them decided to split and work as individual collaborators, thereby ending their 12-year-long association. It was reported that Salim and Javed went their separate ways over ego issues.
In a recent interaction with Arbaaz Khan on the latter’s show, The Invincibles Season 2, Shabana Azmi opened up about various facets of both her personal and professional life. Amid other significant conversations, she opened up about why her husband, Javed Akhtar split from Salim Khan, after working for twelve long years. The host, Arbaaz Khan expressed how Salim-Javed were at the peak of their careers when they decided to split, and even highlighted how people thought Shabana was the one who convinced Javed Akhtar to have his own career. In retrospect, Shabana Azmi expressed how she didn't step deeper into the matter, considering it a personal decision. In her words:
“Till today, I do not know why Salim Javed have split. And since I thought it was a personal decision, I shouldn’t get involved in it. But I think what was happening is he was going through some change, he had started writing poetry, he was moving into another kind of world.”

Moving forth in her revelation, Shabana Azmi highlighted that while she never knew in detail, what really caused the split between Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, nonetheless, she did witness her husband turn into a happier person after such a massive decision in his life. Expressing how she had absolutely no hands behind such a step, the veteran actress said:
“I don’t know what happened and why they ever split. But I do know that he was a much happier person, having taken this huge risk. There is no merit or dis-merit meri taraf se.”
Earlier, during a conversation with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Javed Akhtar had opened up about his changed equation with Salim Khan, which gradually caused their split. The screenwriter highlighted how during their long years of partnership, he and Salim Khan had the same wavelength and rapport, which enabled them to deliver such blockbuster hits at the box-office. However, it was this very rapport which gradually started to fade among them, leading to their split.

In the same interview, Javed Akhtar had walked down the memory lane and remembered what made it possible for him to bond with Salim Khan initially. He revealed that since both of them didn't belong directly from industry, thus they only knew each other and nobody else. Reminiscing the days when he and Salim Khan used to sit by the sea and endlessly chat about stories, Javed Akhtar revealed:
“When we began, both of us were nobodies, we only had each other. So, we would spend a lot of time together, sit by the sea, talk about stories. He would come to my room, I had one paying guest room, or I would go to his house, which was a small one. But when you become bigger, more successful, many more people enter your life.”
