Shabana Azmi is one such actress, who has often been candid about her personal life. For the unversed, she fell in love with Javed Akhtar, at a time when he was already married to his first wife, Honey Irani. However, after their marriage in 1984, Javed’s first wife's children from his first marriage, Farhan and Zoya, gradually became cordial towards Shabana. Recently, the veteran actress spilled beans on her equation with her step-children.
In a recent interaction with Arbaaz Khan on the show, The Invincibles, Shabana Azmi opened up about her gradually blossoming equation with her husband, Javed Akhtar’s children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. While it was initially difficult for the then-young children to accept anybody else apart from their mother with their father. Nonetheless, they gradually built their bond, evolving to such an extent that Farhan and Zoya became closer to Shabana Azmi than their father, Javed Akhtar. In her words:
“These kids were very, very young (when Shabana married Javed). Then they started growing, they started becoming friends with me. And today, they feel more comfortable with me than with their father. If they're exasperated with him, then they have to come and talk to me.”

Moving on in the conversation, Shabana Azmi then spoke about Javed Akhtar’s first-wife, Honey Irani. The actress revealed how Honey was extremely kind enough to let her children, Farhan and Zoya form a bond with Shabana, instead of taking them away. Revealing how she gave the then-young children enough time to gel with her, Shabana said:
“I have a very beautiful relationship with Zoya and Farhan. And I really give the credit to Honey. Because they were really young at that time. It would've been the easiest thing in the world to take away the kids. But she didn't. She encourage them to come with us. And what I did was not overwhelm them initially. I knew they'd take time, and I gave that to them.”
Speaking along the same lines, Shabana Azmi continued to speak about the kind of relation Javed Akhtar’s first-wife, Honey Irani now has with the screenwriter. She explained how Honey has a certain sense of confidence that Javed will be ready to part with his advice with her or even come to meet her in person, whenever she is in need.

Earlier, during their appearance on Koffee With Karan, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar had spoken about their bond with their step-mom, Shabana Azmi. The sibling duo credited the actress for handled their crazy minds during their teenage years. They emphasised how she gave them space and time to gradually develop their bonding with her.
