Shabana Azmi Admits She 'Stomped Over' Honey's Rights By Marrying Javed Akhtar, Says 'All The Mud..'

Sabana Azmi recently opened up about her decision to marry the lyrical genuis, Javed Akhtar. The actress sat for a candid conversation with Filmfare, where she shared that several looked up to her as a 'feminist rolemodel' and were taken aback by her decision. She added that her decision seemed as if she found happiness by 'stomping over' Javed's first wife, Honey Irani's rights.

During a conversation with Filmfare, veteran actress, Shabana Azmi recalled how she was considered an idol by her fans for her stance on feminism and women's empowerment. However, her decision to marry Javed Akhtar came off as something inexplicable. She elaborated on this, stating that it seemed as though she had stolen a woman's (Honey Irani's) right to find her own happiness. She was quoted as saying:

"I was this feminist model. And I had done something inexplicable. Because it was like, with everything that I said, I was stamping over another woman's rights for my own happiness."

In the same conversation, Shabana Azmi elaborated on how her fans, who had followed her for her stance as a feminist, had every right to be upset with her. However, she soon realised that if she started explaining why she made such a decision it would hurt more people. Shabana added that it was the reason she decided to stay quiet and things eventually died down. She was quoted as saying:

"And I think people who followed me as a feminist had every right to feel that. However, I realised that if I started explaining the circumstances under which it was done, it would lead to even more hurt for the people and families involved. It was better to keep quiet, and I think that was a very sagacious decision because after all the mud that was flung at me, it died down."

In the same conversation, Shabana Azmi opened up about sharing a healthy relationship with Honey Irani. She revealed that was only made possible because there was no accusations. She credited herself, Javen Akhtar and Honey for making it possible. She elaborated that instead of explaining themselves, the three of them refrained from making any comment which proved to be helpful in the long run. She stated:

"That was possible because no mud was flung there. The credit for that goes to Honey, me and Javed. You're in a big hurry to explain ki ye jo aap galti samajh rahi hai is ke basis dekhiye. But all three of us refrained from that and it was very wise."

Javed Akhtar was married to screenwriter, Honey Irani. However, their marital bliss was short lived and they got divorced. Soon after Javed married Shabana Azmi in 1984. Honey and Javed share two children, filmmaker, Zoya Akhtar and actor-filmmaker, Farhan Akhtar. While Shabana could not have kids, she had a fabulous career. She was recently seen in Netflix series, Dabba Cartel.
