Divya Bharti was hailed as one of the most versatile actresses of her time. With just 21 movies in a short career span of three years, she became one of the highest-paid actresses. She began her career as a teenager while she was engaged in some modelling assignments. Shah Rukh Khan made his Bollywood debut with the film, Deewana. Throughout the shooting, he shared a warm bond with Divya Bharti. The film’s song, Aisi Deewangi is still considered iconic. It was on April 5, 1993, when Divya passed away in a tragic accident, which came as a shock to many. In a throwback interview with NDTV, Shah Rukh Khan recalled how he came to know about Divya’s untimely death.
The actor recalled hearing the popular song, Aisi Deewangi, being played in the morning. Since the song was picturised on him and Divya, he thought that he had become popular. A little later, he got the news of Divya’s death, and it was one of the biggest shocks for him. Elaborating on the same, Shah Rukh said:
“I pray for her soul. I was sleeping in Delhi and they were playing my song, Aisi Deewangi. I thought I've become a big star. I didn't know how to become a big star. The film was a big hit. Suddenly there were these songs playing and I woke up in the morning and I saw that she had died. She had fallen off from a window. It was one of the biggest shocks, because I think I was supposed to do another film with her."

In the same interview, Shah Rukh Khan revealed the qualities of Divya Bharti and how she once called him an ‘institution of talent’. Speaking about the same, Shah Rukh said:
“Divya Bharti was, I think, stunning as an actor. She was most unlike an actor, like I thought of myself. I was a serious kind of guy and she was this completely whacky, fun-loving girl. I remember I had finished dubbing in Sea Rock Hotel. I dubbed [for] Deewana. I walked out of Sea Rock, I saw her and said hello. She looked at me and said, 'You're not just an actor, you're an institution.' I was very touched by that. I said, wow. I didn't understand it, so I quickly went and read up the meaning of the saying. I realised that it meant a lot.”
For the unversed, it was on April 5, 1993, when Divya Bharti accidentally fell from the balcony window of her fifth-floor apartment. Her untimely death led to many conjectures and conspiracy theories, and it still remains a mystery.
Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti worked together in Deewana and Dil Aashna Hai.
