It was in 2015 when critically-acclaimed director, Vikas Bahl bought one of the most handsome Indian actors ever, Shahid Kapoor, opposite the-then emerging leading lady of Bollywood, Alia Bhatt, together on the big screen. The film was Shaandaar, and the chemistry between Shahid and Alia was simply top-notch. From their outfits to their mushy romance throughout the film, it was a treat for the fans of the two actors to see them together on the big screen.
Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s film, Shaandaar, was released around Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. Hence, it couldn’t manage to make an impressive collection at the box office. However, during the film's promotion, Shahid and Alia indulged in a series of interviews and candid conversations with RJs and shows to promote their film. However, out of all the promotional events, it was Shahid and Alia’s conversation with RJ Malishka that grabbed the most headlines.

During the promotions of Shaandaar, Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were invited to RJ Malishka’s famous candid chat show, where she used to ask juicy and unfiltered questions from her guests. The entire episode was just a banger, as it was filled with laughter and a lot of cute moments between Alia and Shahid, speaking volumes about their friendly bond with each other. However, during a segment of the show, Shahid shared that whenever he and Alia are together, they are usually ‘happy’. Expressing his thoughts about the same, he said a few lines in Hindi, and it could be read as:
"Hum amoman khush rehte hain."
As soon as Shahid Kapoor spoke in Hindi and used the word ‘amoman’, it left Alia Bhatt impressed with the former’s knowledge of the language. The actor kept on sharing more Hindi words with the actress, leaving her in absolute shock, as she had never heard some of them. However, Alia soon stated that she also knew the meaning of a famous Hindi idiom that goes like “Aankh Babula Hona”, leaving Shahid and RJ Malishka in splits. However, Shahid immediately corrected his Shaandaar co-star and told her that the correct idiom was “Aag Babula Hona”. The revelation left Alia puzzled as she realised that she had been using the idiom entirely wrong all her life.

As soon as the video made its way on social media, a series of netizens started grilling the actress for not knowing the basics of the Hindi language. One user shared a clip from the same on Reddit, after which several netizens shared their opinions about the incident. Most of the comments trolled the actress, as one netizen speculated that Alia was playing the ‘I’m so dumb’ just to look cute. Another user commented, “I blame no one but Alia for this whole "I'm so dumb" to look cute acting.. all nepo girls do now bc it worked for her. Like what is this? Smh.” Not only this, even a netizen claimed that Alia was under the colonial hangover, thinking that not knowing Hindi was cool. The comment could be read as:
"The biggest colonial hangover I’ve seen given they literally spent their lives here. I don’t get why shy away from it, you’re not that cool."
