'Shaky' Singer, Sanju Rathod Slept At CSMT Station For 15 Days With One Blanket When He Had No Money

Sanju Rathod became a household name with his viral song, Gulabi Sadi, and helped Marathi pop music go global. However, behind the success lies Sanju’s financial struggle, as the singer was deeply in debt and would often go into hiding to protect himself from creditors. The singer recently discussed the pain and hardships he endured with no money.

Sanju Rathod recalled sleeping at the railway station

In a conversation with Zoom, Sanju Rathod discussed the initial struggles and the harassment he endured while trying to establish himself in the industry. Recalling how he slept at the railway station for 15 days with just one blanket, Sanju stated:

“I was in debt. I came to Mumbai without any money. I slept at CSMT station for 15 days with only one blanket. I lost my phone and I was without a phone for nearly 5 to 6 months.”

He borrowed money to fund his music. He would take loans from his friends and family members to make videos and would release many songs during Ganpati every year. Even when YouTube was not in vogue at the time, he would still get 10-15 million views. When his videos went viral, people assumed that he was making a lot of money. But the reality was that Sanju was in heavy debt and was struggling.

Sanju Rathod recalled hiding on the terrace during his struggling days

As Sanju took money from people, they would come to his house to ask for the money back. The helpless singer endured the abuse or hid on the terrace. Recalling the same, he said:

“People would stand outside my house and abuse me. I’d hide on the terrace, behind the water tank, and literally jump down to escape. There are many stories like that. But now, it’s all forgiven.”

Sanju Rathod’s humble beginning

Sanju Rathod grew up in Dhanwad, a small village with only about 50 houses. A place with no internet and no music teachers, Sanju never thought of making a name for himself. As a mechanical engineering student, he was shy and introverted. However, when Sanju had his first heartbreak, he started writing lyrics as a way to cope with the pain.

He dropped out of college in 2017 and moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in singing. With no space to go, Sanju initially shared a rented space with his friends but struggled a lot to make ends meet. Sanju received the big break when a producer noticed his work. He released tracks like Chamiya and Style Martay.

In 2024, Sanju Rathod became a sensation with his chart-topping song, Gulabi Sadi. Sanju Rathod’s latest single, Shaky, took Marathi pop to new heights and broke all the records across multiple platforms. The song combines elements of Marathi folk, indie pop, and Afrobeat. The track recently reached the No. 1 spot on YouTube’s Top 100 Music Videos Global chart, overtaking international artists such as Ed Sheeran, Rose, and Bruno Mars.
