Recently, the 33rd ESPY Awards took place in Los Angeles, on July 16, 2025. The event was hosted by the comedian, Shane Gillis. This year's EPSY Award event celebrated, and honoured women athletes like Simone Biles, Alex Morgan, Diana Taurasi, Suni Lee, and more. Apart from this, the host, Shane Gillis, made headlines for his sharp, and slightly risky jokes about women in sports.
Shane Gillis, who is known for his no-filter comedy, added a lot of humour at the award function, but along with it, he also cracked a few jokes that went flat, and raised questions about him. He made a joke about WNBA star, Caitlin Clark, regarding her retirement, which was not really liked by many. The joke seemed offensive because it was on the lines of racial stereotypes, and triggered both Clark, and Black women. He said:
"When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she’s going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting Black women."
Apart from the joke on Clark, Shane Gillis also made a political joke which many felt was not at all needed at an award event. He made a joke on Donald Trump, which did not even get a lot of laughter. It was about the events of January 6, 2025, which was too dark considering the event. The joke was:
"Donald Trump wants to stage a UFC Fight on the White House lawn. The last time he staged a fight in DC, Mike Pence almost died."
Shane Gillis also cracked a few more jokes that didn’t sit well with the audience. One of it was again on Caitlin Clark, when he compared her basketball success to his love life, and said that he and Clark have a lot in common and both of them have nailed a lot of threes. While the joke didn't seem very harsh in the beginning, it still came out as awkward, and made a few people in the crowd uncomfortable with it.
The 2025 ESPY Awards celebrated, and honoured women across different fields. From Olympic champions to rising stars, the event celebrated everyone, and highlighted how everyone is redefining excellence. Names like Simone Biles, A’ja Wilson, and Caitlin Clark were honoured on stage, showing how far women's sports has come. Apart from giving, and celebrating awards, the night also saw a few emotional speeches from athletes, who spoke about representation, dreams, and more.
