Gems of the Indian film industry, Sharmila Tagore is widely known for her mesmerizing acting in both Bengali and Hindi films. Since entering the spotlight, this timeless queen has dazzled everyone with her acting skills and elegance. Sharmila Tagore received two National Film Awards, a Filmfare Award, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to Hindi cinema. After marrying the late Indian cricketer,  Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sharmila turned to Islam and changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana. In 2013, Sharmila Tagore also won the Padma Bhushan award for contributing to Indian culture.

Recently, while speaking to Rogerebert.com about her comeback movie, Gulmohar, Sharmila Tagore shared that she was a little apprehensive about playing a gay role. The actress said that she was nervous, but the way the script's writing surprised her. She also shared that the audience's acceptance of this gay role is satisfying. The veteran actress revealed that the role has 'that level' as it is not underlined or underscored but an 'internal evaluation of a person.' The actress stated:

"A little bit of apprehension, but the way they have dealt with it in the script is very subtle, not in your face. And I’ve been surprised, really. The audience has really accepted it. They’re okay with it. It’s not being underlined, or underscored, or an in-your-face kind of statement. It’s kind of an internal evolution of a person. So it’s at that level."

Sharmila Tagore also shared details about her character, 'Kusum' from the movie, Gulmohar. She shared that her character in the movie stuck to her decision. The actress said that 'Kusum' is such a person who is connected to everyone yet knows how to prioritize herself. Sharmila Tagore concluded by saying that as 'Kusum' is in the 76 years of her life, all she wants is to be free. In the actress's words:

"It’s been her decision all the way, whatever the need of that time was. And her growth has been sort of powered by that. If you see the film, you realize what sort of a person she is. She is connected to everybody and she still prioritizes her own self. There’s nothing wrong in that. She’s 76 now, in the film. So now she wants to be free, basically."

Sharmila Tagore's role as 'Kusum' in Gulmohar

After 13 long years, the veteran actress, Sharmila Tagore has returned to the screens with a DisneyPlus Hotstar film, Gulmohar. The movie was written and directed by Rahul V Chittella. In this Hindi film, actress, Sharmila Tagore shared the screen alongside Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, and Suraj Sharma. The veteran actress played the role of 'Kusum', the widowed matriarch of the Batra family. The storyline of this movie runs around household drama. In this family drama, 'Kusum' was seen hiding many secrets from the youngsters of the Batra house. Finally, however, she opened up to her granddaughter, who had fallen in love with a woman like 'Kusum's' youth self.
