When Sharmila Tagore Didn't Sound Excited For Saif Ali Khan And Kareena Kapoor's Wedding, Here's Why

It was in 2012 when not just the Kapoor and Pataudi clan, but the entire nation was excited and happy for Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s wedding. But a year ago, in 2011, Saif’s father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had taken his last breath due to respiratory failure. It was a tough time for the Pataudi clan, especially Sharmila Tagore, and in her own words, her then-to-be daughter-in-law, Kareena had stood by the family. It was a day after Kareena’s birthday in 2011 when Saif’s father passed away and for Sharmila, Bebo was there with her “just like my children and my family”. In September 2011, MAK Pataudi passed away and a year later, in October 2012, Saif and Kareena were pronounced husband and wife.

Back then, there were a lot of speculations about who was recreating Kareena Kapoor’s bridal ensemble, which was originally Saif Ali Khan’s paternal grandmother, Sajida Sultan’s wedding outfit and was later worn by Sharmila Tagore on her nikaah with Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. The wedding outfit of the Begums of Pataudi had comprised of a tissue rust-orange kurta, a matching dupatta embroidered heavily in gold, and sharara with a contrasting, mint-green border. Speculations were that Kareena’s close friend, Manish Malhotra was reviving the age-old sharara, but in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Sharmila had clarified that designer, Ritu Kumar was given to restore and embellish the vintage outfit.

In the same interview, when Sharmila Tagore was asked about what she had planned to wear for her son, Saif Ali Khan’s wedding, she was quoted as saying, “It’s a joyous occasion and it doesn’t matter what I wear. I think I will wear an old sari from my collection. Or let’s see.” Revealing why she doesn’t sound excited, Sharmila had added, “Please excuse me if I don’t sound excited. It’s not even been a year since my husband passed away. This is a happy occasion and everyone in the family is very excited.”

When asked about her daughters, Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan’s excitement, she retorted, “Oh, they are also quite excited about their brother’s wedding. They are all looking forward to the various functions. Incidentally, Ritu has done a few outfits for Saba and Soha as well.”

Just like her in-laws, Sharmila Tagore, Saba Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu, Kareena Kapoor Khan had shared a beautiful relationship with her late father-in-law, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi too. In a conversation with the Hindustan Times, when Kareena was asked about her last memory with her late father-in-law, she had retorted, “He was a very refined and kind man, sweet in nature and nice to be around. I looked up to him. Every time I met him was short and sweet. I wish I had had more time with him. That’s the biggest regret I’ll always have.”

Throwing some light on her relationship with her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, Kareena Kapoor Khan had remarked, “She’s a warm, lovely and very liberal person who has inspired me in every way. She praises my performances and compliments me. She thinks I am very sensible. I am so happy to have her as my mother-in-law!” When Sharmila Tagore featured on What Women Want, the host and her bahu, Kareena had asked her, “What is the one thing that you think I am good at?” To which, she had replied, “I like your consistency. I like the way you keep in touch because I know that if I sent you a message, you will invariably answer. Saif would, not Soha. Soha most certainly won’t reply. I mean, she will take time, but you will reply.”

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore’s daughter, actress-turned-author, Soha Ali Khan had shared the rare, rather the ‘only’ picture of the entire Pataudi family with Kareena Kapoor Khan in the frame in her book, The Perils of Being Moderately Famous. In an interview with the Vogue, when Kareena was asked what is the one thing she would like to gift her son, Taimur Ali Khan that money can’t buy, her answer had won our hearts. She had said, “A chance to meet his grandfather and great grandfather.”
