Shashi Tharoor Asks Vivek And Anupam Not To Drag His Late Wife In The Spar Of 'The Kashmir Files'

Vivek Agnihotri's directorial film, The Kashmir Files, released on March 11, 2022, starred Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi and a few others. The story is based on the genocide of Kashmiri pandits in 1990. It is counted among the few low-budget films in Bollywood which have made a massive collection at the box office. However, along with much love from the audience, it also catered for a never-ending debate between the film makers, supporters and those who felt the wrong depiction of the historical event.

Recently, the film, The Kashmir Files was banned from screening in Singapore. Sharing a portal's news about the same, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, took to his microblogging site and shared a screengrab from the various quotes mentioned in the article. Along with this, hinting towards the promotion of the film by the ruling party of India, Shashi tweeted:

As soon as Shashi Tharoor tweeted, many netizens and big names from the B-town also reacted to the post. The film's director, Vivek Agnihotri responded to the story claiming, "Dear fopdoodle, gnashnab @ShashiTharoor, FYI, Singapore is most regressive censor in the world. It even banned The Last Temptations of Jesus Christ (ask your madam) Even a romantic film called #TheLeelaHotelFiles will be banned. Pl stop making fun of Kashmiri Hindu Genocide." Further, Vivek targeted Shashi's post by pointing him that his late wife, Sunanda Pushkar was a Kashmiri Hindu and tweeted, "Hey @ShashiTharoor, Is this true that Late Sunanda Pushkar was a Kashmiri Hindu? Is the enclosed SS true? If yes, then in Hindu tradition, to respect the dead, you must delete your tweet and apologise to her soul." Anupam Kher who played an integral part in the film, The Kashmir Files, also tweeted, while attaching a screengrab of Sunanda Pushkar's earlier post and asked Shashi to show some sensitivity towards Kashmiri Pandits for the latter's late wife, Sunanda's sake and wrote:

"Dear @ShashiTharoor! Your callousness towards #KashmiriHindus genocide is tragic. If nothing else at least for #Sunanda's sake who was a Kashmiri herself you should show some sensitivity towards #KashmiriPandits & not feel victorious about a country banning #TheKashmirFiles!"

And as Sunanda Pushkar was targeted, Shashi retweeted and mentioned that he had never "mocked" or "disparaged" the sufferings of Kashmiri Pandits with his post. Shashi further asked not to drag his late wife, Sunanda into this matter, and tweeted:

"I tweeted a factual news item this morning, with no comment on its contents or on the film "The Kashmir Files", which I have not seen. At no point did I "mock" or disparage the sufferings of Kashmiri Pandits, of whose plight I am intimately aware, and to which I have repeatedly drawn attention over the years. Dragging my late wife Sunanda into this matter was unwarranted and contemptible. No one is more aware of her views than I am. I have accompanied her to the destroyed ruins of her ancestral home in Bomai, near Sopore, and joined her in conversations with her Kashmiri neighbours and friends, both Muslim and Hindu. One thing I know, unlike those attempting to exploit her when she is not around to speak for herself: She believed in reconciliation, not hate."

It was on the night of July 17, 2014, when politician, Shashi Tharoor's wife, Sunanda Pushkar, was found dead in a suite of a super-luxury hotel in Delhi. During this time, Sunanda's husband, Shashi was attending a meeting with the then-Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, along with the entire Congress Party. For the unversed, Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, got married to a businesswoman, Sunanda Pushkar, on August 22, 2010, and it was his third marriage, after divorces from his first wife, Tilottama Mukherji and second wife, Christa Giles.

Later on, the Congress MP was booked with severe charges like abetment to suicide and cruelty by the hands of Delhi Police. However, after a lengthy legal battle on August 18, 2021, Delhi court's special judge, Geetanjali Goel, conducted a video-conferencing with Shashi and had declined Delhi Police's charge sheet. And Shashi Tharoor was announced clean.
