Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai’s wedding in 2007 was one of the most spectacular events of the year. The entire nation waited with bated breath in front of their television screens to get one glimpse of the former Miss World in her bridal avatar. Despite being tagged as the wedding of the decade, both the Bachchans and Rais chose to have an intimate ceremony in the presence of close ones.
In fact, many close friends and colleagues of Mr and Mrs Bachchan were not invited to Abhishek and Aishwarya’s wedding as they wanted the event to be private owing to personal circumstances. To express their happiness and gratitude, the Bachchans sent wedding cards along with sweets to the ones they couldn’t invite.
It was a token of love from the family, which was accepted by everyone except one, and that person was none other than Shatrughan Sinha. Yes, you read that right. Veteran actor, Shatrughan Sinha, who was also Amitabh Bachchan’s close friend and colleague, didn’t accept Bachchan’s gesture and returned the sweets.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Shatrughan Sinha revealed why the sweets were sent back to the Bachchans. Stating that he expected at least Mr Bachchan would call him before sending the sweets, the veteran actor said:
“Jab bulaaya nahin phir mithai kis baat ki? I won’t be put in second place and embarrass him by accepting the sweets. The least I expected was that either Amitabh or someone from the family would call me up before sending the sweets. When that was not done, why the mithai?”
When Abhishek Bachchan graced the celebrity talk show, Koffee With Karan, the actor spoke about his low-key wedding with Aishwarya Rai. Revealing that his grandmother was at the hospital and the family didn’t feel like having a lavish celebration, the actor stated:

“Very honestly, people are forgetting a very, very major reason why our family wanted to keep it very intimate. There was an ailing grandmother at the hospital, and my father said, ‘You know, we do not feel good about going out there and having a big celebration.’”
In the same interaction, Abhishek also stated that apart from Shatrughan Sinha, every other person accepted the card and sweets. Revealing how one cannot please everyone, Abhishek said:
“Did I want to invite? Did my family want to invite? Did her family want to invite the entire world? Yes. But our parents, all together, sent out a card seeking the blessings of everybody. And everybody was okay with that except for one person who returned that. And that was fine. That was Shatrughan uncle, he returned the card, and that was fine. We accepted it back. You can’t please everyone.”
Before being introduced professionally in 1999, Abhishek and Aishwarya met quite a few times, and both have different memories of their first meeting. The former Miss World once recalled that she met Abhishek Bachchan in the winter of 1990 when she visited his home, Prateeksha, in Juhu. Aishwarya went to the Bachchan house to discuss some professional work with Jaya Bachchan when she saw Abhishek, who was just a teenager, playing in the living room.
In a podcast with YouTuber, Ranveer Allahbadia, Abhishek Bachchan recalled his memory of the time when he first met Aishwarya Rai. The handsome actor also stated that he was a production boy for his father, Amitabh Bachchan's film, Mrityudaata, when he first met Aishwarya, who was shooting for her debut Hindi film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.
