Shefali Shah Walked Out Of Her First Marriage After Realising It Could 'Kill' Her, 'I Can't Do This'

One of the versatile actresses of the Hindi film industry, Shefali Shah has often proved her mettle with her out-of-the-box roles. With films like Monsoon Wedding, Gandhi, My Father, The Last Lear, Dil Dhadakne Do, Jalsa, Darlings and many others, Shefali has been proving her acting prowess. On the personal front, Shefali was previously married to actor Harsh Chhaya, which ended in a few years. After her divorce from Harsh, Shefali got married to ace filmmaker, Vipul Shah.

Shefali Shah looks back at her turbulent marriage

In a podcast as part of Spotlight Sessions, posted on Zoom’ YouTube channel, Shefali Shah looked back and recalled her turbulent marriage. Shefali revealed that nobody ever told her that she was enough for herself and didn't require a husband, a brother or a sister. She revealed that nobody told her that if her relationships doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter.

In the same conversation, the Delhi Crime actress revealed that she too went through that turbulent phase and realised her worth only when it broke her. Recalling the same, she said:

“And obviously, you go through things and you realise it yourself. It comes to a point where it’s make or break for you of yourself. That is when the realisation dawns. It may be happening every day, but then there’s that one moment when you realise, ‘Okay, this can kill me. I can’t do this anymore.’”

Shefali Shah revealed she moved out of her first marriage

In the same conversation, Shefali mentioned that she realised her worth after her first marriage. As it didn’t work out, she decided to move out. Realising that she wasn't a pizza and can’t satisfy everyone, the actress retorted:

“For me, this realisation came after my first marriage. I cannot remain in a situation that doesn’t bring me joy and confidence or make me feel valued. That’s when I decided to move out and live alone for the first time. That’s when I reached a state of enlightenment, realizing that I am not pizza; I can’t satisfy everyone.”

Shefali Shah fell in love with actor, Harsh Chhaya in 1995 during the making of the show, Hasratein, and the couple tied the knot in 1997. Soon after the marriage, cracks started to appear in Shefali and Harsh’s relationship. After three years of marriage, the duo decided to separate in 2000 and opted for a divorce. The separation was difficult for both Shefali and Harsh as they had been together for a long time. Harsh was not surprised by the divorce as he had seen it coming for almost eight months. In a throwback interview with Sidharth Kannan, Haarsh revealed that he is not on talking terms with Shefali as they are not even friends anymore.
