In the late 1990s at Northwestern University, a freshman Sheinelle spotted a visiting high school senior named Uche Ojeh. This gave her the chance to introduce herself to the handsome stranger stranger, and it was the start of their beautiful story.
After that first meeting on the campus, there was no going back. They developed a close bond and supported each other through college, graduating a year apart. After tying the knot in 2007, Sheinelle and Uche embraced parenthood with joy and devotion. In August 2009, they welcomed their first child, a son named Kayin. Just three years later, in July 2012, their family grew with the arrival of their fraternal twins, Clara and Uche, named after his father.

Despite their busy lives, the family remained the heart of their world, with Sheinelle frequently sharing glimpses of their tight-knit household on social media and during segments on Today.
Uche was diagnosed with glioblastoma in late 2023. In these tough times, Sheinelle honoured his privacy and kept the battle largely confidential while she continued her work. She stood as the strongest pillar for him and their family by supporting him through treatments and often attending his chemotherapy sessions after her morning shifts. She ultimately took a leave in December 2024 to be fully present with her family.
After years of struggle, Uche passed away in May 2025 at age 45. The Today show family broke the news with visible heartbreak, sharing tributes that highlighted his warmth, faith, and devotion as a husband and father. Fans, friends, and family alike expressed their condolences for the passing away of a soul as kind as Uche's, and wished Sheinelle and their kids strength.
