For the unversed, Shilpa has not only carved a niche in the Bollywood film fraternity but has also done Tamil and Telugu movies. She has made a name for herself in the South Indian film industry and has been on TV for more than five years. Shilpa then left acting when she got married to a UK-based banker.

The actress was born on November 20, 1973, to  Nitin Shirodkar and Vanita Shirodkar. Namrata Shirodkar, who has won Miss India 1993, is her elder sister. Namrata and Shilpa are granddaughters of the famous Marathi theatre and TV actress, Meenakshi Shirodkar. Since a very young age, Shilpa has had a lot of interest in acting and has always wanted to be in the industry, just like her grandmother and elder sister.

Mahesh Babu is the biggest cheerleader of his sister-in-law, Shilpa Shirodkar. It was back in 1969 when Sholay filmmaker, Ramesh Sippy, took her in his movie, Bharashtachar. Shilpa was just 18 when she essayed the role of a blind girl, and her role was loved by the critics. Before her debut movie, Shilpa lost Souten Ki Beti and Boney Kapoor's movie, Jungle, as she was called a 'jinx' in the movie industry. It was at that time that Mithun Chakraborty, like a hero, came and took her for the movie, Bhrashtachar. The movie had stars like Rekha, Anupam Kher, Raza Murad, while Rajinikanth had a special appearance.

Shilpa then, in her next film, was seen opposite Anil Kapoor. Together they did the movie, Kishen Kanhaiya, and through this movie, she could create a mark for herself. After this film, Shilpa had worked with an array of stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Sridevi, Suniel Shetty, Shah Rukh Khan, to name a few. Shilpa's notable work includes Trinetra, Hum, Khuda Gawah, Aankhen, Pehchaan, Gopi Kishan, Bewafa Sanam, Mrityudand, Gaja Gamini, to name a few.

During an earlier interview with the ETimes, the actress revealed she lost the chance to do the song as the makers of the movie thought her to be very fat. For her, it was unacceptable to accept this, but she took it to be a part of her destiny. Her dream to work with Shah Rukh Khan came true in Gaja Gamini.
