Is wearing optical glasses on the wedding day still a stigma?

Sporting a kala chashma during the wedding rituals is considered a stylish addition, but it is not the case with regular glasses. People still consider it a stigma. However, a few brides opted for the daily wear glasses and have broken stereotypes. Once, a bride who had grown up wearing glasses shared how her makeup artist asked if she wanted to ditch her glasses on her wedding. Sharing her story, the bride told India Today:

"I’ve been wearing glasses since 2003 because of eye power. They’ve been a part of my identity for two decades now. I have never worn contact lenses before; no way was I going to swap my glasses for contacts just because almost every bride does that."

For women who are totally dependent on glasses due to high power, it is their wedding day when they wear contact lenses for the first time. While some manage it effortlessly, others have a harrowing experience. Sharing her first-time experience wearing contact lenses, a bride told India Today:

"I had never worn lenses before. My makeup artist helped me put them on for the wedding, but I can never forget how uncomfortable I was throughout the ceremony and I kept rubbing my eyes. During the pheras, I eventually had to take them off because of the heat. My vision was hazy, and I only wore my glasses again after the vidaai."

Bridal makeup artist and educator, Chandni Singh, spoke about the stigma surrounding wearing specs on the wedding day. In a 2025 interview with India Today, Chandni shared that it was her first experience where a bride wanted to sport her regular glasses on her big day. She mentioned that things related to the stereotypical wedding fashion are changing. She was quoted as saying:

"The stigma around brides wearing glasses has always existed. We never imagine a ‘perfect’ bride with specs. But things are changing now. I can say that because this year, I did makeup for a bride who specifically said she wanted to wear her glasses to the wedding - a first for me."
