'Shrek 5' Theatrical Release Postponed To Summer 2027 After Makers Announced A Six Months Delay

Shrek is an American animated fantasy comedy film. The film series was loosely based on the 1990 children's book by William Steig, Shrek! Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the film series is one of the most loved animated projects. So, when the makers announced that 'Shrek' and 'Princess Fiona' would be returning for the fifth instalment of the series, fans could not keep it together. However, now it seems like their wait has just gotten longer. 

Shrek 5 gets delayed to June 2027

There is no good news for Shrek fans, as their wait to see their favourite character again seems to be unending. On August 12, 2025, Universal and DreamWorks Animation announced a delay for Shrek 5, pushing its release date to June 30, 2027. The companies announced the shift in their schedule on August 12, 2025, confirming that the long-awaited fantasy follow-up was still out of reach for the fans.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation on the reason behind the Shrek 5 delay

Universal and DreamWorks Animation revealed that the film will be released in 2027, two years from now. They shared that there has been a six-month delay in the release from the previously announced December 23, 2026 release date. However, it was not the first time that the film was delayed. Shrek 5 was originally slated for release on July 1, 2026. While both Universal and DreamWorks Animation refrained from stating what caused the delay and why they had to make the decision to push the film to summer 2027, the announcement has definitely left fans upset.

The change also comes with a new date for an Untitled Illumination Event Film, which is moving up from Shrek 5's late June spot to April 16, 2027. Shrek 5 was initially announced with a release date for summer 2026, in 2024. However, the film was later delayed by six months and has now been delayed again. Its reveal promised the first mainline 'Shrek' entry since 2010's Shrek Forever After but kept story details under wraps. DreamWorks and Universal plotted how to bring Mike Myers' iconic green ogre back to the big screen.

While Shrek 5 is far in the future, there are some new details about the film that will shake up the fairytale universe it was originally introduced in 2001. Earlier in 2025, DreamWorks and Universal announced that Spider-Man and Dune star, Zendaya had joined the film's cast as 'Shrek' and 'Fiona's' daughter, with Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all back, too. A 30-second Shrek 5 trailer released in March 2025 revealed its fresh new art style, as well as a sneak peek at Zendaya's character.

What is the correct order to watch Shrek?

Shrek, while a stand-alone film, also had its cameos in Puss in Boots. Every fan has their own order of watching the films. However, the most recommended is stated to be from the 2011 release, Puss in Boots, followed by 2001, Shrek, Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek Forever After (2010), and lastly the 2022 release, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
