Indian cricketer, Shreyas Iyer, is leading the headlines as he has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after suffering a fatal rib injury. India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer sustained a rib injury during the third match against Australia. Shreyas, who took a catch while running backwards from backward point, hurt his left rib cage in the process and was rushed to the hospital.

As per the latest reports, the cricketer is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding resulting from a rib cage injury. Talking about his condition, a source informed PTI:

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding.”

Shreyas Iyer’s injury could have been fatal

As soon as Shreyas returned to the dressing room, the BCCI medical team acted swiftly after Iyer's vital parameters fluctuated. The report further stated that the prompt action made the cricketer stable, or it would have been fatal. As per the source:

“The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon.”

The reports also stated that initially, Shreyas was expected to remain out of action for three weeks, but since internal bleeding was detected, the cricketer would take more time to recover, and there is no definitive time for his return. It is also stated that Shreyas would remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before he could travel back to India.

Shreyas Iyer could have suffered a splenic rupture

As per a report in The Times of India, Shreyas Iyer had dangerously low body vitals after the fall and could have suffered a splenic rupture because of the internal bleeding. His dangerous fall split a body part right under the rib cage and resulted in severe internal bleeding. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. The BCCI is closely watching Shreyas’ process.
