Time and again, we have seen him playing knocks at a time when the entire team was looking up to him. However, Shreyas Iyer's ability to perform under high pressure is a skill that he achieved after years of hard work. Once, in an interview with Cricket Times, Santosh Iyer revealed that it was he who discovered his son's hidden talent to be a cricketer. The doting father admitted that when his son, Shreyas Iyer was just four, he used to play cricket with him at home with a plastic ball. The doting father added that the way Shreyas used to middle the plastic ball, he was convinced that his son was destined to become a batsman. Recalling the same, he said:
"When Shreyas was four years old, we played cricket in the house with a plastic ball. Even then, he was middling the ball in the way that convinced me that the boy had real talent. So, we did everything in our power to make sure he can fulfil his potential."
Further, in the same interview, Santosh Iyer revealed that when his son, Shreyas Iyer was playing for Under-16, he suffered a huge dip in his performance. Although it was natural, after a coach had told Santosh Iyer that his son had potential but he had lost his focus, the doting father got worried and thought that Shreyas had fallen in love.
After thinking about the possible outcomes, Santosh Iyer had taken his son to a psychologist, she told the former to get relaxed as it was a natural dip in form which every sportsperson faces time and again in their careers. Hearing the words of the psychologist, Santosh Iyer got relaxed. Opening up about the same, he said:
"When one coach told me that your son has talent, but he has lost focus along the way, I got a little worried. I thought he's either fallen in love or got mixed up in the wrong crowd! Eventually she told me that I was worrying for nothing. Like most other cricketers, Shreyas was simply going through a rough patch. And sure enough, he soon recovered his form and has never looked back."
