Zubeen Garg’s untimely death due to a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore has left his family and fans in mourning. For the uninitiated, the Ya Ali singer passed away on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52. According to multiple reports, Zubeen was in Singapore to attend the 4th North East India festival and was scheduled to perform on September 20, 2025. According to the latest reports, the event manager has been accused of criminal negligence, and an FIR has been lodged.
According to the latest reports, an FIR has been registered at Morigaon Police Station in Guwahati against Shyamkanu Mahanta, the event manager of the 4th North East India Festival. The complaint was filed by advocate, Ratul Borah, who accused the Singapore event manager of negligence in the events leading to Zubeen Garg’s death at 52. He alleged that Shyamkanu’s decision to bring the Ya Ali singer to a poorly managed event, led to his untimely demise. According to local North East media reports, the event manager was accused of foul play in connection with the tragic incident.
Based on these allegations, an FIR has been registered. The FIR also includes charges of criminal negligence against Shyamkanu. Unconfirmed media reports from Singapore suggest that the Ya Ali singer was at a party on the afternoon of September 19, 2025, before his scheduled performance on September 20, 2025. The singer is said to have gone swimming without a life jacket and reportedly suffered a heart attack in the water. Despite being rushed to Singapore General Hospital, the doctors were unable to save him. His body remains in Singapore for the post-mortem examination, after which it will be sent to Assam on September 20, 2025, for the funeral rites.
Singapore event manager, Shyamkanu Mahanta and his team issued the first statement after Zubeen Garg’s death on September 19, 2025. Confirming the tragic news, Shyamkanu revealed that the iconic singer passed away around 2:30 at the Singapore General Hospital. According to the organisers, Zubeen faced difficulty in breathing underwater. Speaking to NDTV, a representative of the festival, Anuj Kumar Borah, said that the singer was given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. The statement released by the organisers can be read as:
"With profound grief, we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved icon, Zubeen Garg, passed away today at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 PM. Zubeen had arrived in Singapore just the day before yesterday. He was scheduled to be with us at the festival tomorrow, meeting and interacting with people. Earlier today, our entire team was engaged in a business meeting with senior Singaporean industrialists and policymakers at the Shangri-La Hotel to facilitate investments in Northeast India."
The organisers mentioned that while they were busy in the meeting, they received a call from Zubeen’s manager, who informed them about the accident. They revealed that they later got to know that the iconic singer was taken on a yacht visit by the local Assamese community. The organisers also mentioned that they didn’t have prior knowledge about the visit. The event manager said:
"During the meeting, we received a call from Zubeen’s manager informing us that he had met with an accident and had been rushed to Singapore General Hospital. We later learned that a few members of the local Assamese community had taken him on a yacht visit, of which we had no prior knowledge."
