Zubeen Garg (birth name Zubeen Borthakur) is not the first member of the Garg family to have met with a tragic end. They went through the same heartbreak once in the past as well, when the youngest member, Jonkey Borthakur, passed away in a car accident. The singer and actress was just 26 years old at the time. The incident occurred in February 2002, while she was travelling for a stage show with her co-artists in the Sonitpur district of Assam, near Tezpur and Balipara.

Although details of the event are not widely covered, according to a Redditor's account, the accident was pre-planned, and Zubeen was the target. The post-writer alleged that Zubeen had offended some 'powerful people' through his words or actions, which led to the outcome. Zubeen remained unharmed because he ditched the car and opted to take the bus with the other bandmates. As per the Redditor, Zubeen 'never recovered' from the unfortunate event and plunged himself into alcoholism to cope with the grief.

Zubeen Garg composed an album for Jonkey Borthakur

Zubeen created and dedicated a music album to his deceased sister, Jonkey. The singer released the Assamese album, Xixu, in 2022, which was composed by Raaj J Konwar and Kalparanjan Hazarika. It chronicles Zubeen's love for Jonkey and grief over her untimely passing. The album is available for streaming online on JioSaavn.

As the news of his passing surfaced, his friends, fans and industry acquaintances are pouring in their condolences.

Zubeen breathed his last in Singapore; he was there for an upcoming show. The singer was scheduled to perform at the 4th Northeast India Festival on September 20, 2025, showcasing the rich culture of Northeast India. In his last Instagram post, Zubeen invited his fans to the show, highlighting the varied musical acts it has to offer. He also mentioned that he would be there as the show's Cultural Brand Ambassador. The post can be read as:

"Friends in Singapore, I will like to invite you to 4th North East India Festival in Suntec, Singapore during 20th and 21st September. Come and explore the exotic part of India, we are carrying quality agri, craft products, tea experience, dance forms, fashion shows and evening musical show presenting Rock bands, rappers from India's North East. I will be there throughout the Festival as Cultural Brand Ambassador and will perform on 20th evening with my popular Hindi, Bengali and Assamese Songs. I would like to invite you all, it will be Saturday and Sunday and entry is free. All come and support us. Cheers!"
