The enigma of Hindi cinema, Smita Patil needs no introduction. The stunning actress, not just broke the stereotype about an actress’s fair looks but also played a significant role in women-oriented films. A perfect combination of beauty with brains, Smita began her career as a television newsreader in Doordarshan at the age of 16. In a career of 10-12 years, Smita won 2 National Awards, 3 Filmfare Awards and a Padma Shri.
Just like Smita’s professional life, her personal life too had gained a lot of attention, and the reason behind the same was her relationship with the already-married actor, Raj Babbar. When Raj left his first wife, Nadira Babbar to marry, Smita, she was labelled as a home-breaker. Many sympathised with Nadira, while strongly criticising Smita.

One of the unknown facts about Smita Patil was her sixth sense. After her death, in an interview with Lehren, actor Amitabh Bachchan revealed that Smita had a premonition about his accident on the sets of Coolie. In the interview, Amitabh Bachchan revealed that his association with Smita was only limited to the sets and other than that, they never met socially or contacted each other.
However, a day before his accident, Smita called him to check on him and revealed the bad dream she had about him. Talking about the same, Amitabh Bachchan had said:
“I was staying at the West End Hotel. One night, at about one, I got a call in my room. The operator said Smita Patil wants to talk to you. I first thought it was a prank. But then I took the call and it was Smita. She said, Amit-ji, I am sorry to disturb you, but are you okay? I said, yes, I am fine. She said, no I just got up and I had a very bad dream. I just wanted to call you and find out if you were okay.”

Just a day after Smita’s call, Amitabh Bachchan met with a tragic accident in Bangalore while shooting for his film, Coolie. Stating how Smita was a regular visitor when he was in ICU, Amitabh Bachchan had shared:
“Next morning I had my accident. It was just unbelievable. Throughout the two or three months I was in the ICU, she was a regular visitor. When I came home, she would come every evening and enquire about me. I can never forget that. She was a unique lady.”

After Smita Patil’s death, it was also reported that Smita had a premonition about her own death and once told her co-actress, Poonam Dhillon about the same. In Meera Dewan’s documentary, Searching for Smita, Poonam recalled Smita had said:
“I will die at thirty-one.”
On December 13, 1986, the legendary actress bid adieu to the world at the age of 31. It was after 15 days of giving birth to her son, Prateik Babbar, the gorgeous Smita had left for the heavenly abode due to some childbirth complications.
Smita Patil’s untimely death was a big shock for all her fans, and the film fraternity still mourns the huge loss.
