The timeless beauty, Smita Patil was an institution of talent. The gorgeous dusky beauty had ruled Indian cinema with her powerpack performances in movies like Manthan, Aakrosh, Arth, Mirch Masala, Waaris and many more. With more than 80 films in Hindi and other regional languages, Smita had given a new meaning to the parallel cinema.
It was on the sets of Bheegi Palkein, when Smita had met actor, Raj Babbar, who was already married to actress, Nadira Zaheer. Raj, who was completely smitten by Smita couldn’t stop himself from falling in love with her. It wasn’t just Raj who had fallen for her, even she had found solace and peace in his arms. The two had defied all societal norms and had started living together.

On December 13, 1986, post 15 days of giving birth to her son, Prateik Babbar, the gorgeous Smita had left for the heavenly abode due to some childbirth complications. Her untimely demise had left everyone shocked. However, it is said that before her death, Smita had wanted her to be cremated as a suhagan. After Smita's death, her last wish was fulfilled and she was dressed as a bride.
In an interview with The Times of India, Raj Babbar had talked about his relationship with his wife, Smita Patil. He had stated:
“Smita entered my life unexpectedly. When I met Smita Patil for the first time, I realised there was depth to her character. She was generally very friendly and sought my advice once in a while. Gradually, we formed an intimate bond. My relationship with Smita was not the result of problems with Nadira - it just happened. Nadira was mature enough to understand my feelings. Juhi always loved being with Smita.”

Smita Patil had passed away at the tender age of 31. Raj Babbar, who was madly in love with her was shattered after her death and had expressed his emotions in the same interview. Talking about the same, he had shared:
“Smita left me forever. I was traumatised by her death. But I didn’t want my problems to affect the lives of those who counted on me. I sought refuge in my work, but the wounds took time to heal.”
After Smita Patil's demise, Nadira Babbar had surprised everyone by accepting Raj Babbar back in her life. However, the public had ridiculed the actress for accepting the man who had left her for another woman. But she was confident about her decision and had stuck to it.
Raj Babbar's children, Arya and Juhi (from the first marriage with Nadira) and Prateik (from Smita Patil) share a warm bond with one another.
