Sonali Bendre is one of the finest actress of her times. Known for her beauty, personality and charisma, the diva has wooed generations of audiences with her performances. After a brief period of modelling, she made her debut with the film, Aag at the age of 19, which landed her the Screen Award for Best Female Debut that year. Thereafter, she went onto carve an incomparable trajectory of cinema, with films like Diljale, Zakhm, Hum Saath Saath Hai among many others.
In a recent interaction with The Humans Of Bombay, Sonali Bendre talked about an unheard anecdote from her career. She spoke about the time when she was shooting the film, Naraaz, that was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The film starred Pooja Bhatt as the female lead, whereas Sonali was the second lead. Talking more about her experience, the latter revealed that for her song in that particular film, she was passed down rejected costumes by Pooja Bhatt. Adding how these second-hand clothes had an alternative advantage for her, Sonali said:
“When I signed 'Naraaz' with Bhatt sahib, the clothes for the second heroine were the rejects of Pooja Bhatt. That’s what came to me. But the advantage of that was her rejects were clothes only I could pull off. Suddenly that one song from Naaraz made me.”

Among other conversations, Sonali Bendre then spoke about the importance of having good looks, in order to become a part of the film industry. She remarked that it wasn’t a thing to shy away from saying, since at the end of the day, acting is a visual mode of entertainment. Sonali revealed that she herself could only be a part of films since she did have a sense of symmetry within her facial features. In her words:
“Film is a visual medium, that’s the business. There is no need to shy away from it. If you do not look a certain way, you cannot be on screen. You need to have a certain kind of symmetry, and it is only because of that symmetry I got into this business.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Sonali Bendre added in her two cents on the debate around nepotism in the film industry. The actress revealed that she, too, was an outsider, and there were certain moments when she felt like an imposter. She expressed:
“I remember most of my career, I was not enjoying what I was doing. When I was shooting Naraaz, I did not even know ‘5,6,7,8’ was the cue. Everyone started to dance while I was still waiting for the director to call ‘action.’ I was so embarrassed. I felt like an imposter.”
