The presence of Indian celebrities on international platforms has always been a source of pride for the country. But, in the last few years, when several Indian celebrities and influencers went to the Cannes Film Festival or Met Gala, it started a debate on whether these celebrities had a purpose to serve at the event or just made an attempt to improve their PR. Once again, the debate has been reignited; however, this time, the concerned platform is Wimbledon. The debate went a notch higher after Diet Sabya took a dig at Indian celebrities lining up to sit in the Royal Box, which got an unexpected reply from Sonam Kapoor.
Diet Sabya, who never shies away from sharing views on celebrities and fashion, took to it Instagram handle and shared a carousel of celebrities who visited Wimbledon. The list included the likes of Urvashi Rautela, Jacqueline Fernandez, Priyanka Chopra, Avneet Kaur, Amy Jackson, Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, Neena Gupta, Farhan Akhtar and more, who kept their best fashion foot forward at the event. However, it was their caption which took a dig at these celebrities as it read:
"Are we feeling the desification of Wimbledon?"
Similar to their other posts, this post got mixed reactions from fans. Some felt that it was a proud moment to see Indian celebrities on the global stage. In contrast, the other section of the audience felt that it was just another trending activity among Indian celebrities. One fan agreed with Diet Sabya and commented, "Wimbledon ko Cannes bana diya hai inhone." Another netizen criticised the Indian celebrities and penned, "This is beyond disgusting. For the sake of the good lord, stop ruining major sports and cultural events." Another fan defended their favourite star and wrote, "Priyanka has been attending Wimbledon for years now." However, it was Sonam Kapoor's reply that won the internet as she defended the Indian celebrities and wrote:
"Love the captions! Indians everywhere! So, good, na?"
The Royal Box at Wimbledon is a special seating area that is reserved for VIP guests like celebrities, famous athletes, royal family members and other important people. However, unlike other sporting events, the guests don't have to buy expensive tickets or wait in line. They are invited to have lunches together before the match and are served with tea and drinks after the games. The invitations to sit in Royal Box are sent out by the chairperson of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), who gets suggestions from the club's committee, the Lawn Tennis Association, and other well-known people in tennis.
