In an unfortunate incident, South Korean actor Song Young-kyu lost his life at the age of 55. The actor was best known for his contribution in projects like Land of Happiness, The Desperate Chase, Tomb of the River, Youth Village School and Good Morning President. He also appeared in dramas such as Oh My Ghost Client, The Haunted Palace, Destined With You and Becoming Witch. The tragic news was shared by the Korean publications on August 4, 2025.
Song Young-kyu passed away on August 4, 2025. It was just over a month ago when he was involved in a drunk driving incident. The actor was only 55 years old when the tragedy struck. According to several media reports, Song Young-kyu was found inside a parked car in a residential area in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province of South Korea. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
According to The Manila Times, the Yongin Dongbu Police Station confirmed the news. The police officials confirmed that an acquaintance discovered Song Young-kyu's body around 8 am (Korean Standard Time). The police have further assured the fans that there are no signs of foul play in the matter. However, authorities are still probing the matter and will soon share the updates. So far, there are no statements from the actor's family.
The Korean star seemed to be having some struggles with alcohol as he was caught driving under the influence several times over the past two months. The first time the matter came to public knowledge was in June 2025, when he was caught driving under the influence in Yongin, where he lived. He was later arrested on June 19, 2025, for once again driving while being drunk, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 per cent.
The news had caused a massive stir online about Song Young-kyu's safety and the safety of the natives around whom he was driving. As a result, he withdrew from the stage production of Shakespeare in Love, giving his final performance on July 25, 2025. The production teams behind his ongoing dramas, The Defects and The Winning Try, also announced that they would edit out or significantly reduce his scenes, as a result of the buzz.

However, no one had expected that things would go so out of hand, that Song Young-kyu would end up losing his life. The Defects, which had already been shot for, had previously issued a statement which stated that his screen time would be restricted following the controversy. For the unversed, in South Korea, celebrities are held to a higher moral ground and controversies often lead to heavy scrutiny and impact on their careers.
According to IMDb, Song Young-kyu was born in South Korea on April 18, 1970. He began his acting career in 1994 in a children's musical, and there was no looking back for him ever since. Following his 1994 debut, Song built a steady acting career over three decades, appearing in more than 40 television dramas and numerous films.
