Starting with the first time he had seen Sridevi, Boney Kapoor had said:
"It happened the first time I saw her on screen, this was probably in the late 70s, when I saw one of her Tamil films. I said to myself that this is someone I would want to have in my film."

"I went up to her set, met her. When I met her, it was almost like a dream come true. You know, she is an introvert and doesn't communicate very easily with strangers, and I was a stranger at that point of time. The few words that she spoke in broken Hindi and broken English, they touched me and moved me, and I got more curious to know her."
Boney Kapoor was adamant to sign Sridevi for Shekhar Kapur’s movie, Mr India and even paid her more than what her mother had demanded. Sridevi’s mother was her manager and had demanded 10 lakh for the film, however, Boney Kapoor had offered 11 lakhs for the role. He had added:
"Sri was the highest paid actor, among the females. I knew she had done a film for around Rs 8-8.5 lakh, and probably, this was her mother's way of negotiating. I heard her figure and I said 'No, I'll pay Rs 11 lakh.' She thought I was a mad producer from Bombay who is offering more than what she asked for! Well, that's how I got close to her mother."

When the film, Mr India had gone on floors, Boney Kapoor had started making his move to impress Sridevi. To pamper Sridevi, Boney Kapoor had arranged best make-up room, costumes and ensured that she felt comfortable on sets and get whatever she wanted. Every time Boney Kapoor met Sridevi, he was getting more and more affected by her and he had realised that he was head over heels in love with her.
Boney Kapoor had always wanted Sridevi to realise that he would be there for her and gradually, she too had begun reciprocating his love. Boney had shared at the India Today Woman Summit 2013:
"She saw that this man is too persistent and perhaps realised that I was sincere and not looking for a fling. Somehow, things fell in place."
Boney Kapoor had stood like a rock with Sridevi and her family when her father had passed away and it brought them closer even more. In an old interview, Sridevi had also talked about her love story with Boney Kapoor and had said:
"Boney came to me in 1984 to sign me to play Seema, the lead female role for Mr India. He confessed later, that he fell in love with me outright! He, however, did take a few years to sort out his life before formally proposing to me in 1993."
Sridevi had further shared that when she got to know him, she had fallen in love. Her sister was shocked by her decision, but she had followed her heart. She had added:
"I fell in love with him when I got to know the real him. It was difficult, traumatic even and it took me many years to finally accept the fact that I was destined to be with Boney. In hindsight, I only wish that I had realised and accepted his love for me sooner. I always believe in following my heart and I am glad that I did. My parents had passed away by then and my sister was shocked with my decision. But now, she shares a great relationship with my husband and is convinced that he is the best thing that ever happened to me!"
Sridevi was linked with many A-list actors of Bollywood at that time. The amusing fact was that they all were married and Sridevi had once said that she will not be someone's second wife ever.
In the 80s, superstars, Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty were reported to be madly in love with each other. It was also reported that the two had secretly gotten hitched with one another. The duo had apparently felt attracted towards each other on the sets of Jaag Utha Insan (1984) and this had led to the rise of an affair. Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali and was finding it difficult to choose between the two ladies. If rumours are to be believed, Sridevi had even tied a rakhi on Boney Kapoor’s wrist to end all the doubts from Mithun’s mind about her relationship with Boney. Tired of being the second woman, Sridevi had given an ultimatum to Mithun, but Yogeeta was hell-bent on not leaving her husband and had reportedly attempted suicide. That’s when Mithun had thought of cutting all ties with Sridevi and she went on to marry producer Boney Kapoor.
Sridevi was linked to her co-star, Jeetendra after they had worked together in the films, Himmatwalla, Jaani Dost and Justice Choudhary. After the success of Himmatwalla the romance stories between Sridevi and Jeetendra were doing the rounds. It was also said that they were staying in the same room and in a 1984 interview, Sridevi had opened up about the rumours and had said:
“Never! Honestly, till this day, I have never been to Jeetu’s hotel room, nor has he ever come home. I know people have been saying a lot of bad things, but this is the truth.I am an innocent girl. I’m not a fool, but I am not a calculative person either. And I am certainly not a man-eater.”
In fact, Sridevi had also mentioned that she will not marry a married man or will never be someone's second wife. She had added:
"It's a wrong belief that second wives are a common feature in the South. Even here, it's a big thing to marry a married man or have a second wife. Everyone gossips about it. People are more conservative in the South than in Bombay.”

So it came as a shock when I realised that my husband was in love with somebody else... There was nothing left in the relationship to give it a chance because Sridevi was already with a child."
Boney Kapoor and Mona Kapoor never really divorced and were separated in 1996 because of Sridevi. According to reports, Mona and Sridevi were friends and the actress used to stay at their house and consider Boney as her brother. Later, an affair had started between Sridevi and Boney and soon she was pregnant with Boney’s child.
