Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most beloved actors in Bollywood, having made a mark in the film industry with his phenomenal acting skills and undeniable charm. However, behind the bright smile lies a void created by the death of his parents, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima Khan. Recently, an old interview with the actor surfaced on the internet, which once again reminded his fans that 'the brightest of smiles often hide the darkest of pain.'
In the video, Shah Rukh Khan was seen candidly speaking about his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan's struggle with their parents death. The actor recalled how his sister stood in front of their father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan's dead body and collapsed. He revealed that she didn't cry or speak for two years and just stared into the oblivion. He was quoted as saying:
"I remember my sister standing in front of my father’s dead body. She just looked, she didn’t cry, she didn’t say anything she just fell and hit her head on the ground. For two years after that, she didn’t cry, she didn’t speak, she just kept looking in the space; it just changed her world. By God’s grace she is better now, she has got some deficiencies."
In the same conversation, Shah Rukh Khan recalled how his sister, Shehnaz had another health scare when he was shooting for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. He revealed that he took his sister to Switzerland after the doctors in the country told him his sister won't survive. However, she got better, but never recovered from the passing of their father. He stated:
"During the making of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, she again was hospitalised and they (the doctors) said she will not survive. I took her to Switzerland, got her treated there while I was shooting Tujhe Dekha Toh Ye Jana Sanam. But she hasn't ever recovered, from the loss of her father, the suddenness of him passing away. Then it got compounded with my mother passing away ten years later. So we are, what in Muslims is called, Yatim and Yasir, which means father and mother less."
Further in the conversation, Shah Rukh Khan mentioned that Shehnaz was highly qualified, having also completed an MA in Law (LLB). However, she lost to the reality of losing their parents. He further revealed how he uses a "sense of detachment, false bravado" as a coping mechanism and to safeguard himself from the feeling of loss, as he doesn't think he would be able to handle the pain his sister must be feeling. He stated:
"A lot of things that I do, which people think are flamboyant and very Bollywood-like, to cover up the sadness affecting my life and me becoming like my sister, I don’t have the guts to be so simple, so hurt, so disturbed. So, a part of me keeps on working around the clock, keeps on being happy in spite of the things which are said about be, or make a joke about the things that I do, but still keep doing them. If I do not do it, I think I would be in the same state of potassium deficiency and depression."
As soon as the video was shared on the discussion platform, Reddit, netizens started chiming in to share their views on Shah Rukh Khan's story. A user wrote, "He has deliberately hidden her sister all these years for her own good, of course. She still lives with him, and sometimes you can see her in family pictures." Another said, "Taking take care of you unmarried sister who is suffering from mental health I bowdown to him while in this era of people abandoning their parents." A comment read, "This broke my heart." Another stated, "2 things a person can never ever recover from. Loss of parents and untimely death of a young child." A commenter penned, "Not everyone works hard for success. Some people like to keep themselves busy to avoid facing reality."
