Prithviraj Sukumaran Transforms Into 'Kumbha,' The Menacing Villain In S.S. Rajamouli's 'SSMB29'

Acclaimed filmmaker, S. S. Rajamouli had dropped a significant teaser in the form of the first look of Prithviraj Sukumaran as the villainous "Kumbha" in his eagerly anticipated collaboration with Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. The film, currently referred to as SSMB29 and also teased as Globe Trotter, features international icon, Priyanka Chopra in a pivotal role.

Prithviraj Sukumaran in and as "Kumbha"

The character reveal is striking: Prithviraj appears in a wheelchair equipped with robotic arms and legs, his expression cold and powerful, a combination of physical vulnerability and terrifying authority. The mechanical parts and dark aesthetic point to a character who is more than just adversarial; he’s formidable, sophisticated, and built for conflict.

Rajamouli praised the actor’s transformation, publicly calling Prithviraj “one of the finest actors” he has worked with and emphasising that bringing Kumbha to life “was creatively very satisfying.” This first look not only introduces the antagonist but also offers a glimpse into the scale and tone of SSMB29. The film is being shaped as a globe-trotting action-adventure thriller, and the character of "Kumbha" hints at a blend of mythology, advanced technology, and raw physical stakes.

Fans reactions to the poster

The poster stirred immediate buzz online, with fans comparing "Kumbha’s" look to some of pop culture’s most memorable villains. Comments referred to Krrish 3, and even likened the design to Marvel super-villains like 'Dr. Octopus.' One user quipped: “Looks like Dr. Octopus meets Kaal—let’s go!” Others lauded Rajamouli’s ambition, writing things like “this will redefine Indian action cinema.” But not all feedback was glowing; some fans criticised the poster’s composition or quality, questioning whether the visual was strong enough for a film of reportedly massive scale.

What’s Next for the Project?

The excitement around "Kumbha’s" reveal indicates that SSMB29 is gearing up to be one of the most high-profile Indian films in recent years. While a formal release date hasn’t been confirmed, reports suggest a potential 2027 theatrical launch. Meanwhile, Rajamouli has hinted at further reveals and teasers ahead, raising anticipation about how this saga will unfold. Mahesh Babu shared the first look alongside Rajamouli, captioning it: “Stood on the other side… time to meet you head-on KUMBHA… @PrithviOfficial #GlobeTrotter.” Priyanka Chopra echoed the excitement: “We take off with this one… Meet KUMBHA!! @therealprithvi."
