Suchitra Krishnamoorthi rose to fame with her performance in the SRK starrer film, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Apart from her career in the Hindi film industry, she has equally been a part of the South Indian film industry as well. While her acting career has been comparatively shorter, she has also entered the field of writing, and has authored a few books. In her personal life, she had been married to eminent filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur. However, they got divorced a few years later after their marriage. Fast forward to today Suchitra is living her life along with her daughter, Kaveri.
In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Suchitra opened up on her broken marriage with filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur. She recalled that cracks started to appear in the first year of her marriage itself, and that she was ready to leave him. However, she mentioned that at the time, she got pregnant with Shekhar’s child, and so she decided to stay with him for another year. In her words:
“Actually, when I got pregnant, main shadi chhod rahi thi. I was moving to the Berklee College of Music. Mujhe part scholarship mil gaya tha and I wanted to learn music because it was always my dream. But I discovered I was pregnant. So fate has its own way of unravelling itself and unravelling your life story. So I stayed for a few years phir I was like, forget it mere se nahi hota.”

Going further in the interview, Suchitra revealed how her ex-husband, Shekhar Kapur had levied conditions on her, that he did not want her to act in films. He was okay with Suchitra working in music videos or singing, but he felt avarice that acting and the showbiz world might corrupt her. She mentioned that since she was too young and naive at that time, she did not argue with him and readily agreed to his conditions. She mentioned:
“My husband was very clear that he doesn't want his wife to act. I said, okay, no big deal. I was too naive, too young to understand ki jab koi kisi ko bolta hai ki kaam mat karo, wo thinking kya hai. I always had more talent than ambition so I didn't think anything would stop in my life. Though it did.”
In the same interview, Suchitra recalled the typical judgements she faced from society over her decision to quit her marriage. She revealed that women told her just to have another baby with her husband, and not to quit it. She was even told by them that she would be left stranded after her marriage dissolved. However, Suchitra slammed them shut by telling them that she would happily live on her own terms that live a life with someone who crushed her soul.

In the concluding segment of the interview, Suchitra spoke about the years that she missed out on her first love of acting. For the unversed, she had quit acting right after her marriage, even though she was at the peak of her career back then. Nevertheless, she does not regret missing out on her precious golden career and stardom, she recalls her marriage as an eye-opening, learning phase from a painful time.
