Sudhanshu Pandey rose to prominence with his role as 'Vanraj Shah' in Anupamaa alongside actress, Rupali Ganguly. The actor did spectacular work on the show, leaving fans bitter with his intense portrayal of 'Vanraj'. However, despite the character's negative portrayal, it garnered Sudhanshu immense love and left fans shocked when he announced his departure in 2024. While his exit from Anupamaa left fans upset, he marked his return with Karan Johar's The Traitors. In a recent conversation, the downsides of playing such intense characters were discussed.
Sudhanshu Pandey played the role of 'Vanraj Shah' in the television show, Anupamaa and marked his place as the antagonist in the history of TV. However, in a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, the actor revealed how playing such intense characters can be adverse to a person's health. He revealed that the role affected him so deeply that he had to take medications for the pain and physical aches. He added that immersing himself in a character so deeply took a toll on him.
During the conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Sudhanshu Pandey revealed that he had some difficulties in returning to normalcy after playing intense roles. He added that it sometimes took him days to recover fully, drawing a parallel with Hollywood actors like Dustin Hoffman, who have needed rehabilitation after certain roles. The actor further emphasised the importance of understanding personal limits and paying attention to one's own state of mind when deeply engaging with a character.
"That's where someone like me, who is a very balanced person, comes in. I know that I can enter that space and return. I mean, I do get affected—naturally. It's happened to me even in a show like Anupamaa. I've touched on dark spaces, and it's hit me very hard. It had taken a toll on me, too."
In the same conversation, Sudhanshu Pandey revealed that he had to take medications at times because he was in so much physical pain. He added that this was because he had gone so deep into the character that it had driven it to a point of actual aches. He admitted that he was like that as an actor and always gives his everything to every role he plays. He was quoted as saying:
"You know, I’ve even had to take medication for pain and aches sometimes, because I’ve gone so deeply into the character. But that’s just how I am as an actor. I don’t care whether it’s television or OTT- I give my 100 per cent to everything I play."
In the same conversation, Sudhanshu reflected on his time in Anupamaa and expressed immense gratitude for the show and its impact on him. However, he added that while he appreciated the experience, it was exceedingly exhausting for him to play the same character for four years. He further expressed his desire to move on to roles that span a shorter duration, allowing him to explore different characters across various platforms in the years to come.
