Bengali Actor Sumi Har Chowdhury Found Wandering The Street Disoriented, Looked 'Mentally Disturbed'

Former Bengali actress, Sumi Har Chowdhury, best known for her work in Dwitiyo Purush, was recently found in a shockingly unrecognisable state as she roamed around the streets of the East Burdwan district, West Bengal. Sumi, originally a resident of Behala, Kolkata, was spotted sitting alone by the roadside near East Burdwan’s Amila Bazar on Monday, July 14, 2025. The news has come as a shock to the industry, and fans are worried about Sumi’s health.

On July 14, 2025, locals spotted a young woman sitting alone by the roadside near Amila Bazar in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district. A video that has now gone viral shows Sumi, dressed in black full sleeves and shorts, clutching a pen and paper, books kept on her side, and speaking incoherently in English and Bengali. 

At first, no one recognised her due to her dishevelled appearance. As locals approached, she repeatedly said, ‘I’m Sumi Har Choudhury, an actress,’ but few believed her. It was only after someone searched her name online that her identity was confirmed, later verified by the local police as well. One local told The Indian Express:

“She kept repeating that she acted in serials. At first, we didn’t believe her. Then we found her pictures online, and everything checked out.”

Inconsistent responses raise concerns about Sumi’s mental condition

Though her credentials checked out, the Tolly actress reportedly gave conflicting accounts about her background during conversations with police and locals, raising concerns about her mental state. In a now-viral video circulating on Bengali news portals, Sumi claims she's from Behala, Kolkata, and that her parents still live there, though she left home years ago and doesn’t know their whereabouts. She also said she had been living in Bolpur before coming to Burdwan.

Sumi gave varying statements about her place of origin, sometimes saying she was from Kolkata, and at other times, claiming she lived in Bolpur, Birbhum. Police sources confirmed that she was once a resident of Behala in Kolkata and may have lived in Bolpur for some time. However, how she ended up in Khandaghosh, Bardhaman, far from both places, remains unclear. In the viral video, when asked about her current situation, the former actress vaguely described herself as a ‘free bird’.

Industry and fans react to Sumi Har Chowdhury’s shocking state

Social media users expressed shock and concern after a video of Sumi went viral, highlighting the lack of mental health support in the entertainment industry. Her Instagram bio reflects a vibrant woman passionate about dance, theatre, food, books, and travel. Her last post, dated April 6, 2025, showed two cheerful selfies, making her sudden decline in just three months even more unsettling. One user commented:

“She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and had her own food startup. How did things go so wrong?”
