Indian-origin astronaut, Sunita Williams returned to Earth on March 19, 2025, along with Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Russian astronaut, Aleksandr Gorbunov after being at the International Space Centre for 286 days. The delay was caused by an issue with Boeing's Starliner, which resulted in the astronauts to have to be in space for nine months. Now, Sunita, who has Indian roots as her father is from Jhulasan, Gujarat, plans to make a visit to India soon and go to her dad's hometown.
NASA Astronaut, Sunita Williams's bucket list plan includes making a visit to India soon and also meeting the ISRO's team. During a press interview with NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 Post-Flight News, she shared that India was amazing every time her spacecraft flew above the majestic Himalayan ranges when she stayed for nine months in space. When Sunita's Space X capsule made a touchdown on the Florida coast, the people at her ancestral home gathered to watch her return. Sunita, who is missing India, said:
"I hope and I think for sure I'm going to be going back to my father's home country and visiting with people and getting excited about the Indian astronauts who's going up on the ISRO mission coming up."
Sunita's mom, Ursuline Bonnie Pandya, is of Slovenian-American origin, while her dad, Deepak Pandya, hails from Gujarat. Williams had also shared that she would love to tell everyone, especially ISRO about her experience in space and how India has done a phenomenal job in the space domain and she would love to be part of that and help them along.
Sunita, going ahead in the press interview, revealed that when she completes her impending India trip, she would love to take her crew also with her and make them eat some spicy food. She also shared that when she was in space, she could see the geographical formation of India, where all the landmasses collided for the Himalayan ranges to form, and that was how India was formed. Sunita shared:
"India is amazing. Every time we went over the Himalayas- we got some incredible pictures of the Himalayas- so just amazing. Like I've described it before just like this ripple that happened. Obviously when the plates collided and then as it flows down into India. It's many, many colors."
Sunita also shared that when one comes from the East, going into like Gujarat and Mumbai- the fishing fleet that's off the coast, there gives one a little bit of a beacon that here is the home, all through India. Williams revealed that the nation looked like a network of lights with the top cities being the brightest as they tamed down towards the smaller cities. Sunita cited:
