Following his father, Dharmendra's footsteps, Sunny Deol paved his path to become one of the most talented actors in the Hindi film industry. Over the years, Sunny has worked in many popular films, including Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Indian, Ghayal, Ghatak: Lethal, Border and many more. Now, the actor once again spread the magic of his exceptional acting skills with the film, Gadar 2, almost after 22 years. However, Sunny has always been vocal about his problems with dyslexia and also revealed why he is always worried about his dad, Dharmendra.
In an interview with Bombay Times, Sunny Deol revealed his dad, Dharmendra is his idol. Further, he was asked if watching his dad on set working, even at this age, worries him. To this, the Gadar 2 actor immediately revealed that not only him but his daddy also used to worry about him constantly. Thus, the doting son is often spotted alongside Dharmendra on the sets. Calling Dharmendra one of the legendary actors in Hindi cinema, Sunny Deol said:
“One is always worried, it’s like he is worried about us, and we are worried about him all the time. Whenever he is shooting, I go on the set to see if he is okay. Beta baap ke baare mein sochta hai, baap bete ke baare mein. I can say that because I have sons (Karan and Rajveer), so I know how it feels. My father has been my only idol, because he is the only actor anywhere in the world who has done every genre of films, and they have been successful. There has been no actor who has been successful across so many genres.”

Further, Sunny explained how today’s filmmakers and actors spend much time researching subjects. He also mentioned that the actors used to devote months to delve deep into their characters. However, Sunny shared his take on it and mentioned how yesteryear characters onscreen were more lively and filled with emotions. Mentioning how Dharmendra worked back to back for the films, and this is quite impossible for today's actors, Sunny added:
“Back in the day, they did two or three films, and most of them did well. They didn’t have scripts, and they made better films and far quicker. Dad would do two-three shifts, sleep for a few hours and do films back-to-back. Aaj ke din mein koi aise karke dekhe. All this research actors do, I find all this gibberish. Considering this (the time spent doing it), all our films should have been great. Back then, what research did actors do… But they still played their characters beautifully. Characters were based on real life and real emotions.”
In the same conversation, Sunny explained how he takes the soul of the character while playing it onscreen and doesn't just imitate the latter. However, the actor also talked about his dyslexia and talked about how he keeps reading dialogues and makes them his own. Elaborating more about his problem right from childhood, Sunny shared:
“If you are playing a biographical character, then it is different, but even then, in a film like Border, where I played Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, I didn’t imitate him. I took the soul of the character and did it in my own way. It’s not like I researched ki woh kaise chalta tha, kya karta tha. When I am doing a film, I don’t even have the dialogues with me. That is another thing - I am dyslexic, so I can’t read and write properly, and that has been my problem since childhood. Earlier, we didn’t know what it was, and people would think…ki yeh duffer aadmi hai. I always get my dialogues in Hindi, and I take my time to read it. I read them many times and make them my own. That is my prep for the part.”

Earlier, in an interview with Brut India, Sunny had opened up about Rajveer Deol and revealed that the latter suffered from dyslexia in childhood. The doting father added that despite having problems, his younger son never let his challenges define his life. Sunny also mentioned that Rajveer was a naughty kid, yet he had his own way of overcoming his problems. The doting daddy added that Rajveer was always full of life.
