Supreme Court Backs Late Pilot Sumit Sabharwal's Father In Air India AI171 Crash, 'No One Can Blame'

The Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London crash has been India's most shocking air disaster, which destroyed several families. For those who don't know, the crash happened just minutes after the takeoff on June 12, 2025, which killed around 260 people. The tragedy sparked widespread fear about air safety. During the early days, the blame quickly fell on the pilot, Captain Sumit Sabharwal. But now, the Supreme Court has cleared the blame on the pilot.

The Supreme Court comes in support of the late pilot

Earlier, since the blame fell on the pilot, Captain Sumit Sabharwal, his father Pushkaraj Sabharwal and the Federation of Indian Pilots filed petitions seeking a judicial, court-monitored investigation. They had shared that the AAIB's early findings claimed that it was the pilot's fault and regarding the same they wanted a probe. Well, now the Supreme Court has shared its view and reassured the pilot's father by explaining that no individual can be blamed. Even though, the next hearing will be held on November 10, 2025, the court reassured Pushkaraj said:

"No one can blame the pilot-in-command. No one in India believes it was the pilot’s fault."

AAIB’s earlier report

India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau had published a report in July 2025, which had mentioned that the fuel control switches for both engines had gone from 'Run' to 'Cutoff' position within a second of each other shortly after liftoff, which led to the crash right after the takeoff. Even though, they blame anyone directly, they had left it open and shared that more analysis was needed.
