Sushmita Sen created history and broke all barriers when, in 2000, she decided to adopt her first daughter, Renee. For the unversed, the Juvenile Justice Acts and adoption policies via the Central Adoption Resource Authority have never forbidden single women from legally adopting kids. However, for Sushmita, there were challenges and social biases as well. The actress revisited the time when the judge had told her dad that no good family boy would marry her, as she was adopting as a single mother.
Sushmita sat down for an interview with Dr Sheen Gurrib for her YouTube channel, sharing how she and her family had to face societal biases before adopting her first daughter, Renee. Sushmita revealed how the judge had reminded her dad of the repercussions related to adoption as a single, unmarried mother, and the actress shared how her dad was always supportive of her decision. It had flipped the entire script in the court, and the actress shared:
"The judge also warned my father that no good family boy would want to marry me, but he told him that I have not raised her just to be someone's wife. Then they granted it and that was the turning point."
Sushmita's adoption process with Renee was not at all a cakewalk. She shared that her dad had signed over all the assets to demonstrate his financial intent in order to support his daughter's decision. For the actress, adopting Alisah in 2010 became a cakewalk, but her family's commitment towards her decision changed the game. Sushmita's fight in court extended for three years from 21 to 24, and she feared that the decision of the court would go against her adoption dreams. In her words:
"When I legally became an adult at 21, I knew this was what I wanted to do. So, from 21 to 24, the legal battle began. Once it started, at least I had my daughter with me under foster care. But you live with the constant trauma of 'What if the family court does not pass this in my favour? They'll take the child back, and now this child has started calling me Ma.' I had a plan."
The actress shared that she had told her father at the hearing to keep the car ready so he could take her and they could drive away with their daughter, Renee. Her dad said that they were not doing anything of that kind, as the actress was adamant not to keep her baby far away from her. She does thank her father, whose role helped the decision of adoption be in her favour at court. Sushmita said she was proud of her dad as she has her kids in a country that wants a dad or a dad-like figure to adopt a baby. She said:
"He was told by the court that he has to show financial intent to support my kid and that he had to sign off half of his assets but my father told the court, 'I am not a very rich man, so if you take half of that, it will be nothing. I have come to sign unconditionally everything I own in her name."
What are your views on Sushmita Sen revealing that the court had told her father that no boy from a good family would marry her because she had adopted a child as a single mom?
