'Swiped' True Story: How Accurate Is Lily James' Portrayal Of Bumble CEO, Whitney Wolfe Herd?

Hulu’s newly released film, Swiped, has garnered significant attention within a day of its premiere. The movie stars Lily James as 'Whitney Wolfe Herd', based on the real-life woman who changed the dating world forever, earning her status as a billionaire. The movie charts Wolfe Herd’s journey from co-founding Tinder to launching Bumble, a dating platform where women are the ones who send the first message to their person of choice.

Directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Swiped explores the roadblocks Wolfe Herd faced while charting her path as a high-profile businesswoman. Through Lily James, the biopic covers Herd’s early days at Tinder, from receiving abusive texts from her former boyfriend and co-founder, Justin Mateen, and facing marginalisation in company decisions before leaving.

While legal limitations prevented Wolfe Herd from participating directly in the film, Lily James has been receiving praise for her portrayal of the character. Now, let’s dive into the true story behind Swiped, exploring some of its key moments and examining how accurately the Hulu movie portrays the rise of one of tech’s most influential women.

Whitney Wolfe Herd’s journey: from Tinder fallout to Bumble

Before founding Bumble in 2014, Whitney Wolfe Herd helped co-create Tinder in 2012 with co-founders Sean Rad, Justin Mateen, Jonathan Badeen, Joe Munoz, and Chris Gulczynski. The app became a breakout success and spread worldwide as a dating platform. However, behind the scenes, Herd’s experience at Tinder was marked by harassment, discrimination and exclusion, an experience which motivated her to create a dating app where women have control.

In the film, viewers see Wolfe Herd’s (Lily James) struggle to assert herself in a male-dominated tech environment, which culminated in her lawsuit against Tinder in 2014. Swiped has portrayed these challenges with a mix of accuracy and bits of drama. However, the biopic showed the real abusive texts she received from her ex-boyfriend Justin Mateen (Jackson White) that essentially fuelled the legal fallout.

Fact versus fiction – who is 'Tisha'?

While much of Swiped is indeed based on real events, being a biographic adaptation, certain elements seem to have been fictionalised for dramatic impact. For instance, the character of ‘Tisha’ (played by Myha’la), a headstrong black woman who pushes 'Wolfe Herd' to think about intersectionality in the film, does not exist in real life, nor is it based on a real person. Speaking about the decision to include her character, Myha’la told Dazed Digital:

“I actually think that [director] Rachel’s decision to include a Black woman’s perspective in this was the thing that we can relate to today, because I feel like in the 2010s, nobody was talking about intersectionality in those offices… Or if they were, it was a quieter conversation. I think it was cool that she [Tisha] was the only character thinking about it in that way.”

Similarly, Wolfe Herd’s on-screen speech during the film’s climax, where she condemns Badoo founder and Bumble co-founder Andrey Andreev (played by Dan Stevens), is largely fictionalised for dramatic effect. In reality, her responses were more measured due to legal obligations.

Launching Bumble and the success that followed

After leaving Tinder, Whitney Wolfe Herd moved to Austin, Texas, and founded Bumble with the support of Andrey Andreev and a small team. In the film, the creation of the app has been dramatised to highlight the positive and collaborative culture Herd fostered, in contrast to her former workplace. Bumble’s rollout gained traction in no time, growing from 1 million users in its first year to nearly 40 million active monthly users today.

Is Swiped factually accurate with Wolfe Herd’s real life?

Well, the answer is both ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. Swiped itself acknowledges at the end that its story is ‘inspired by’ Whitney Wolfe Herd’s life rather than strictly factual. However, while the makers took creative liberties with timing, dialogue, and character interactions to craft an emotionally compelling narrative, the film portrays real lawsuits, harassment, and key events.

Regarding the portrayal of Wolfe Herd, actress Lily James, who is also the producer of the film, shared how she focused on capturing the entrepreneur’s determination, intelligence, and humanity, rather than replicating every detail. Speaking about playing such a powerful real-life character, the actress told ABC7:

"When you play different characters, sometimes I kind of can't wait to get out of their skin and let them go and kind of shed that experience. And with this, I really want to hold on to some of those qualities that Whitney has. She moves with such great conviction and mission and continually breaks boundaries. I would love to do that in my own way, in my industry too."

Swiped premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 19 and is now available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. Viewers from India can stream the film on JioHotstar (formerly Disney+ Hotstar).

Through its dramatised lens, Swiped encourages more women to pursue leadership roles in male-dominated industries, presenting Wolfe Herd not just as a tech CEO, but as a trailblazer who redefined online dating.
