Sydney Sweeney's Back-To-Back Movies Flop, From 'Eden' To 'Christy', Are Controversies To Blame?

Sydney Sweeney definitely knows how to remain in the headlines and give fodder to people to gossip about. Since her newfound fame from Euphoria, she has become the talk of the town time and again. After the bathwater soap, the great jeans/genes ad, and dating Scoot Braun controversies, Sydney is trending again. However, this time, people are talking about her films. The fact that all of Sydney's recent films have been flops amid her many controversies has raised eyebrows.

Sydney Sweeney's latest film Christy opened with one of the worst box office earnings

People were shocked to see Sydney Sweeney in a never-before-seen look as the titular character in the biopic, Christy. The actress had gone through a drastic physical transformation to look like the boxer, Christy Martin. There was a buzz among people after Sydney's new avatar for the movie went viral. However, that buzz did not manifest into box office numbers. Released on November 7, 2025, the film earned USD 1.3 million in its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Sydney came out to defend the movie amid the meager earnings reports, and wrote on an Instagram post:

"I am so deeply proud of this movie...thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. I love you."

Sydney Sweeney's last two films before Christy were also box office duds

Sydney Sweeney starred in Echo Valley, released in June 2025, and in Eden, which came out in September 2024. These two films were also box-office failures, like Christy. Echo Valley could have flopped for a number of reasons. However, the fact that Eden did not do well either at the box office was a huge shock. The film was directed by Ron Howard, a highly acclaimed filmmaker with multiple Academy Awards. It stars Ana De Armas, Jude Law, and many other A-listers. The few people who watched the film also gave Eden positive reviews.

Is Sydney Sweeney's controversy affecting her acting career?

There have been many speculations about why Sydney Sweeney's movies have bombed at the box office. As Dwayne Johnson's The Smashing Machine, a boxer biopic, also flopped recently, it could be that people aren't interested in such stories anymore. As for both Echo Valley and Eden, the marketing and promotion could have been an issue affecting the visibility. However, many people have noticed a connection between Sydney Sweeney's controversies and her box-office bombs.

The actress' last commercially successful film was Immaculate released in March 2024. After that, starting from Sydney's collaboration with Dr. Squatch to produce her bath water soap, her great genes/jeans ad, dating Scooter Braun (who isn't a well-liked businessman after his feuds with Taylor Swift), to her latest GQ interview where she defended the jeans ad, Sydney's controversies and her acting career have been going on opposite trajectories. The actress' next film, The Housemaid is set to release soon. The reception of this movie can confirm if the controversies have actually affected Sydney's career.

Do you think that Sydney Sweeney's films haven't been doing well because of her negative public perception, or that she is just unlucky for the moment?
